Can't Touch This State Hospital

If the nearby prison guards don't catch you, the black bears and coyotes will. In the remote regions of Michigan's upper peninsula, the former Newberry State Hospital is usually a no-no place for urban explorers.

After asking the Assistant to the Warden of the nearby prison very nicely, we were allowed to have one of few—and probably one of the last—tours ever given. No explorers have photographed this place since it was abandoned, and for good reason. The grounds were very securely monitored as we drove around campus, and nearly every door was locked behind us.

http://i22.photobu...rounds-pano_sm.jpg

We spotted a mother coyote and her pups entering one of the buildings, and the night before, the warden's secretary was chased off the grounds by a black bear. We kept our tripods ready in case we were met by unwelcome residents.

1

From 1895 to 1992, the asylum served the region's psychiatric needs until it was proven that yoopers were crazy beyond professional help anyway. These findings led the state to construct a maximum security prison on the grounds instead, allowing the doctors and nurses to find more productive work and keeping normal Michiganians safe from criminals.

2

For many years, the patients were allowed to roam the grounds unconfined. That was before it was discovered patients were wandering away into the deep woods surrounding the town, often starving or freezing to death.

3

So the long corridors that now connect the buildings were built, containing the vast courtyard in a one-quarter mile square.

4

Doctors offices and exam rooms.

5

6

These groovy shoes were found left as is. Ghostly movement in the background is the warden.

7

9

A box of used needles, not scattered everywhere by vandals.

10

Children's building.

15

16

Nature found its way into the children's building, creeping across practically every surface.

17

This fire exit was unreal. A curving slide behind the doors would shoot escapees from the second floor to what we decided was the basement. I wonder if children were able to use this at their own amusement.

18

Some of the movies were really depressing. Very little uplifting comedies.

19

20

21

Patients and employees alike left their marks behind on the corridor walls. We spent probably thirty minutes total just reading the half mile of graffiti.

22

"If you want to be in love with christ then go communism"

23

"JC is in love with communism for the united states"

24

A gurney marks the corridor entrance the R. G. Ferguson Hospital, which served the medical needs of patients.

25

26

Ferguson lobby. Until about five years ago, the prison used portions of this building for offices and training drills. Since the heat was turned off, the deterioration has accelerated.

27

Hospital morgue.

28

29

X-Ray machine.

30

31

These were about twenty feet from each other.

32

These birds, by strange coincidence, flew into the same window, got trapped, and died in their own panes.

33

Ekoh shooting the courtyard and the warden's assistant checking doors.

34

Lastly, this is a through-a-window shot of the asylum theatre, which we very regrettably couldn't access.

Hope you guys don't mind the big number of pictures. I take to document as much as I could, because other than Ekoh, I don't think anyone else will get the opportunity.

Great shots, and a great example of what can be seen/achieved by going about things the legit way.

Im curious though why they are so hard up on security ...i realise the prison is nearby but you give the impression they take that place very seriously. Maybe im seeing that map wrong - is it still connected to the main jail grounds per say ?

either way thankyou for an opportunity to take a walk through history.
