Need help selecting a camera!

So I've been meaning to actually getting a decent camera and a fellow urban explorer has a pair of point in shoots she would be willing to sell me for a really good deal. My problem is I've seen the pros and cons of both cameras and was just wondering what kind of choice you would make if you where in my shoes.

Canon g12:
-foldable and rotatable screen.
-ISO 80-3200
-Lens 28-140 mm equivalent (5x zoom)
-super easy to adjust settings (assignable button) iso wheel, etc. . .
-720p at 24 fps
- min shutter speed 15 seconds
-really good for low light

What I like about this camera is the fold able view screen. I haven't had any chance to try it out yet. But I don't like that the min shutter is only 15 seconds which would make light painting a lot harder then the Sony version. But its apparently really good in low light conditions.

Sony Hx50V
-fixed screen
-ISO 80 - 12,800
- Lens 24-720 mm equivalent (30x zoom)
- 1080p at 60 fps video
- min shutter speed 30 seconds
-20.4 mp pictures.

She let me use this camera when we went out to an old abandoned powerplant. I really liked it because of its semi long min shutter speed. It also seemed to do alright in low light conditions. I also like that it can shoot 1080p video at such a high frame rate, but its a feature I haven't really tested out yet.

It's up to how it feels to you.

Based on just the specs I would say the Sony would be better. Higher resolution. Which makes cropping easier without losing as much details as the canon. And more optical zoom which is always good. Higher fps from Sony 10fps vs. 2fps from canon. Which helps with action shots.

However the good bout the canon is it can shoot in RAW
Has a viewfinder ( which draws less power then live view lcd screen)
Tiltable screen only time I see that being an advantage is roof topping. And you don't want to personally look down yourself.

The Canon's f/2.8, larger sensor, and RAW capability make it my pick for photos. But at that price, why not a Canon G16? You'd get faster continuous shooting, f/1.8, and 1080p @ 60fps. An even better option, IMHO, would be the Sony a5100.

The reason is a fellow explorer has these two cameras and is willing to sell them for a good price. I can only afford one.

Ah, that certainly makes sense. In that case, I'd say pick the Canon. Megapixels means very little in the digital camera world. I've seen beautiful large prints from high-end 8mp cameras. The fact you can get an f/2.8 aperture and shoot RAW makes all the difference....for photos. If you plan to do video, the Sony is somewhat better, but I'm not convinced that 1080p is going to be THAT much better than 720p on such a small sensor.

+1 for the Canon. Especially for urban exploring where low light is usually the biggest challenge in photographing.

Check out these pictures taken on auto with the Sony a6000 at 3 a.m.
It's also very lightweight which is great for urbex.

I agree completely with WhiskeyPapa. I'd go for the canon for the same reasons he listed. I'd also like to say that the 15 second limit shouldn't be too much of an issue for darker areas if you have some decent lights with you to compensate.

Canon. Latter it will make the transition to a pro Canon cam easier. Make sure you get the Digital Pro software with the cam.

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.
