I'm not looking for the owner. I ask this question... Have you been lucky to find any kind of stuff in your explorations ? If the owner is around here HEY I don't mind to return it but I'm not looking for him or her.
| I would have left it there. Someone else's misfortune is not the kind of luck I would want. Taking things while trespassing can easily elevate it to a more serious crime; it's a liability and not why I explore. How would you feel if you had been the one to misplace it? Worse, how do you know it's not stolen? & pics or it never happened:P I found this, and released him...

| | | We recently found a litter of puppies and decided that it was in the puppies best interests to take them from the property. Two of my friends that were there with me took them home for the evening. Sadly, one puppy, which had been sickly from when we first discovered them, died hours after we found them. Two others were liberated from the main group by an emaciated and frightened mother. Fortunately, we were able to place all of the others in homes within 24 hours (it was a huge litter - like 8 puppies, I think). Anyways, my long-winded point to the puppy story was that this was the only time I can remember actually "taking" something pretty cool from a location. Every rule has an exception, I suppose. I've found tons of things, and I'd be lying if I said there wasn't that moment's hesitation before I put whatever it was back in its spot on that dusty shelf and left it where it was found. This is particularly difficult to do when I know the next person that finds that same item will likely pocket it without a second thought. This irritates the hell out of me, but that's how it goes.

| | | I actually had a situation play out once where I ended the day loading my car full of stuff. Let me back up and explain myself here, it's legit...honest. I had driven by this house near where I live for weeks, maybe months, with the thought of "that looks abandoned" every time. Finally, it got to me...I snapped...I had to know. So, one misty and cool morning I just drove up to it and started poking around to see what was up. It certainly looked abandoned, felt abandoned...but I gave the cursory "Hello!?!?" a few times and then walked right in. The place was in pretty good shape for having been exposed to elements for a while, but was an absolute mess. So many things were still in it that I thought someone might still live there, until I completed the full explore and found nothing. Also, the open fridge with rotting food was a pretty good clue. I left the place, curiosity satisfied, and decided I would come back later for a more thorough sweep. When I got home I called my wife and told her about it and she thought I was crazy and didn't want me going back up there alone. I'm clumsy, I'll admit...but have never been hurt on an explore (minus some wasp stings). But, as married guys know, you sometimes say "sure" and just chalk it up to the best agreement you'll get from the spouse to do these things. That afternoon my wife called me on her way home from work and said "I think that house you were talking about is being demolished. I'm driving by and there's all kinds of equipment there and the porch is gone." Shit. I told her was going back up there to see if it was true. And, yes...there it was...getting smashed up. The demolition contractor came up to me and I asked him if they were doing a full tear down, which they were. I told him that I was hoping to look around there and he said "Help yourself. Don't get hurt. and don't take anything from that pile *pointed to a stack of stuff*, but you can have anything else you want. We're done for today. It'll be down completely on Monday (this was a Friday)." That was it...I had permission to be there. Not only that, but if anything caught my eye...I could just take it home. I didn't even bother with pictures of the place, my priorities shifted: Save The Stuff. I spent that night and part of Saturday dismantling doors and other architecturally significant stuff. I pulled down a cedar wall plank by plank that I ended up giving a friend so she could put it back up in her house. The moral of the story is that, yes...I took stuff from a place to keep it from being reduced to rubble. And though I haven't done much with any of it, other than keep it in my garage for now, I feel better about not letting it get bulldozed. I'd do it again, given the opportunity...which seems pretty rare. The few times I've talked to people before going into a building with permission, I've put the info right up front that I'm not there to strip copper or anything. I even have a "Release of Liability" waiver that I can pop out and sign, should they have any reservations about letting me in semi-unsafe places. This way, they know my full intentions going in and don't worry about me cleaning them out. So...yeah. It's a long story to say that I have found and taken stuff because of a strange circumstance coupled with good timing and weird luck.
