What are some of the basic tools for roofing and how are they used or helpful.

A good pair of high top lace up boots.
A stable platform starts with your feet.
Ankle support reduces the risk of fall due to over turning your ankle as well as protecting ankles and knees from needless injury.
The right sole should be as slip resistant as possible.

Never goof around near drop offs. Keep some bend in your knees when standing near ledges. Preferably don't stand where you can fall. Keep a handhold when available.
Never underestimate the wind. Squat or lay down fast if necessary.
Each step and handhold count.
Take smaller steps where there's no room for error or a possible slip hazard.

Many people die each year by losing their balance or slipping while at height...

Don't forget the three points of contact rule, especially when traversing somewhere very sketchy or unstable. Also, beware of unstable roofs; if you think you may be on an unstable roof, try and keep to areas that have support beams below. On corrugated iron roofs for example, follow the bolts, as they line up with the beams.

Your best tool here is your own knowledge of safety and the warning signs associated with roof collapse. Someone I knew, I wouldn't call him a friend, more like a well wisher, went straight through a roof and right into the middle of a very popular, upmarket shopping arcade. He broke both legs and made the news, mind you, he was dumb enough to lean directly on a glass skylight. Good luck and keep safe.

Roofies, obviously. They help improve your concentration and balance.

All of this. Keeping your body (and thus, center of gravity) low helps with weight being swung around, and take slow steps.

-Finger, for pressing elevator buttons. Just in case, bring ten along.
-Feet, for walking on flat surfaces and stairs. Protect them with a double layer of protection: shoes and socks, on each foot.
-Pants, so you won't get arrested for indecent exposure.
-Underwear, which protects your junk.
-Shirt, jacket, depending on climate.
-Glasses so you can see.
-A camera so you can take pictures.
-Wallet, because you might need money before or after and it makes no sense to leave it at home.

Also full length sleeves and elbow pads; useful when accidentally crashing through roofs

This is a good start, but you forgot beer or scotch.

Windbreakers, for breaking wind.

It is helpful to have a hat with a brim or bill. Makes it easier to see the dim roof surface (and trip hazards) by blocking the city lights.

Shoes with decent grip.

For the most part, tools and rope will cause trouble or spark bad ideas. If you really need a rope, you need more than a pocketfull of paracord.

Balance and traction. Lots of roofline traverses depend on these and some damn sense.

Also I'd recommend bringing a decently thick pair of gloves. They are invaluable if you are climbing on shingled roofs, as well as protect your hands from metallic objects that typically are located on the edge of business/multistory roofs.
