^ This is exactly what I was going to say! I would go back and tell myself to chill the fuck out and relax. Of course, some people start exploring with the exact opposite problem (thinking they're invincible), which is way worse.

I have lots of other ideas of things in my head, but I'm having a hard time summing them up briefly, and I don't feel like writing a book here.

Each site is unique.
Danger presents it's self in ways you can't always foresee and many times unexpectedly.
Like a open manhole in tall grass... distraction maims.
Being alive is risk... risks can never be fully eliminated.
You need to effectively control the heat, and know when to bug out.
Know your limits.

Better to bug out and live to splore another day...

Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

If you're going alone, and don't know if you'll have cell service, for goodness sake tell someone where you're going and how long you plan to be gone. Always better safe than sorry.

Going alone always scares me, you can never fully trust technology to work and help you get help. And if you're with someone, even if you both get trapped, at least you don't have to die alone. (though not dying would definitely still be better)

Never go alone. That's something I've always followed pretty well, but that is my golden number one rule. NEVER go alone.

Get a better camera and learn how to use it sooner.

That this was an actual "thing" and I wasnt just weird. Also wish I knew to take pictures! Most of the stuff I did before a couple of years ago were active locations in the midwest at night after making nice with the foremen.

*this is not always true but has nearly always been in MY experiences. usually applies to hospitals, asylums, and the like*

The smaller the location, the sketchier it is - the larger the location the less sketchy.

The tiny hospital in my town, though heavily vandalized, was always crawling with cops and arrests were common there weekly. Same has been true for other similar hospitals.

The largest asylums I have been to- large American Kirkbrides, UK Echelons, sprawling cottage style campuses- tended to be walks in the park.

There have been exceptions to this.

I'd educate myself on the law and how to maintain anonymity a little better. I wouldn't blindly trust the motives of everyone that claims they have this common interest.
I'd be a lot richer and a lot less stressed if I'd done a better job of these things.

Can you expound on this a bit? For those like me who tend to trust easily.

yep - agree.

I always just ask to see a place and have never been told no. Never thought it was a hobby, and never thought to take pics.

Pay attention when you take your photos, you'll thank yourself later.

Oh and I wish I had known how addicting exploring really is...

I wish I knew more people explored. I've been doing this forever and I found out about a year ago that more people share the interest

Bring a portable battery charger. I'm not sure what it is about these places or my phone but I'll go with a fully charged phone and while taking pictures my battery just drains completely. Only recently did I start bringing a portable charger and it's definitely come in handy!
