01 - Niagara Power VS Honeymoon
by Ground State Photos, on Flickr

This gem of abandonment architecture sits atop Niagara Falls and is one of the most coveted locations in the city, but the Parks Commission keeps it locked tight and the constant presence of Niagara Parks Police cruising by is unnerving. But I got an exciting text from Freaktography tonight stating that a friend of his noticed the front door of the building wide open today. I doubted it, but told Freak that I'd head out and check. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear???

I gave it a quick drive-by and was shocked by the ajar doorway! Even as I parked quick and took a shot, a NPP vehicle slowed down and reminded me that there was no stopping in front of the building. Sheesh! Talk about bad luck - I was only 30 seconds out of my vehicle. After parking properly and pondering how I was going to get inside the fenceline, I walked around the south side of the building and realized all bets were off. The door was only open to allow ventilation for a small work crew doing something inside the building.

At this point, I thought of pulling a proud Finz519 moment and strolling into the building in hardhat and work-boots, announcing confidently to the workers, "I'm here to take photos." But instead I hung my head in shame and started to head home, only to notice a giant new gaping hole in the fence-line surrounding the Parkway Inn. Although many shots of have been taken of the place, the low-lying outbuildings have really not been visited too much. I got inside a single unit years ago and discovered a horrific/gorgeous wet-rot disaster. So... I decided to make something of the evening and see if neighbourhood kids had provided new opportunities for access to these units.

I was not disappointed! The new security fence has given them MORE confidence, since authorities can no longer race their vehicles into the parking lot and cruise around the buildings to bust them. There are numerous accessible units here now, and the rooms are ewwy-gooey-death-by-inhalation good! Local houses sit literally 10m away from some of these rooms. Residents would be shocked to know that these deplorable conditions are right out their back windows.

And yes!
I did, in fact, notice the terrifying orb in the last photo, knowing full well that I was being stalked by one of the dead hotel patrons of the past. I zoomed in on it and - I'm not sure! - but holy shit, I think it's Zelda Rubinstein!!

The one night I didn't have my mask with me either. I think I knocked 2-3 years off my life. My tripod feet need to be bleach-sprayed!

Surreal photos! Dig the saturation and sharpness in some of these shots. Could you post the exif info for a couple of them? I guess I'm mostly interested in learning what lens/aperture/shutter/iso you used.

The first shot was taken a few years ago when I was in the habit of using a proprietary program to erase the metadata from all my abandonment photos.

The other two are here:

I actually emailed the Niagara Parks to get access to the building so I can get some wedding pictures done inside one of the doorways leading into a turbine room (it is an all marble room) and turbine floor but they gave the old "waaaah it's been deemed unsafe for years waaah we can't have you sign a waiver saying you'd be willing to die, waaaaah get a picture at the falls if you want waah I cry watching Hawaii five 0" anyway y'all get it, bureaucratic bullshit. Sucks cause my family is like 2 generations deep in Hydro's ass so least they could do is let me in so I can show my uncles, dad, and grandpa that I got the respect.

It's nice to know that they at least responded. I always figured they'd just ignore such requests and not even give them the time of day.

There's always the other location in this thread for you to return to and take those wedding photos. Haha. Closer to your old stomping ground anyway.

Chipp will give me better backrounds. My only fond memory of the motel is when we'd play fugitive all over the property. One of the "boys" lived directly behind it so it was a fence hop and your in through the back window of an outbuilding. Other than that it has been an eyesore, and of course a magnet for destruction.

I always loved dsankt's writeup of his experience at the Electrical Development Co. It was him and Kowalski who inspired me to see it for myself, what seems like forever ago now. The mission to do so preoccupied my entire existence for several years, and I still get goosebumps thinking about those sketchy late night adventures with friends I'll never forget. Unfortunately I never took the time to craft a proper story of my two visits, but the photos are at
http://tohellandba...Tailrace%20Tunnel/

and

http://tohellandba...el%20-%20Take%202/

They were in the process of actually cementing over the driveshaft openings during our last visit in 2010, sealing them up forever and ensuring that whatever metal ladders and flooring still existed at the time would surely be a crumbling mess today. It was always humid in the wheelpit, but it transformed into hilarious tropical steam-sauna once everything was covered up. My contact within the Parks Police tells me that even they haven't been down there since it was sealed, and that it's now really and truly inaccessible. It's one hell of sad ending to one of the most glorious feats of modern engineering, but I'm glad that I got to see it. That place is magical, and those memories are ones I'll never, ever forget.

(just noticed that a lot of those photos are crappy, low-resolution 7-year old edits which I've since re-done but never re-uploaded. If you browse through my instagram account you'll find a number of newer-takes on them, for those of you interested.)
