If you have an IPhone, there's this incredibly useful little gem on the app store. The best part? It's free. I use it to map out all the locations that I've gathered. It's pretty damn awesome, considering that remembering tons of locations became a bit of a chore for me.

I like this a lot. Nice and simple no frills. I used to update my Google Earth locations and keep a copy on Google drive that I could open when I was out and about. But recently the Google Earth app started to suck so I have been wanting an alternative.

Now to start transferring locations...

Thank you for sharing.

This is a great thread and I hope other people chime in on this one. I really like the app too, btw. The geofencing could potentially be a really useful tool (as long as I don't abuse it, lol).

I just spent about five minutes playing with that app the OP suggested, so I'll probably throw in more comments about it after I have a chance to spend more time with it. Up till now I've only used Google and one other map app that had a 500 pin limitation, which hindered its usefulness to me.

Thank you for sharing!

I agree with Matt too. I am incredibly sick of trying to navigate through three separate programs just to see my maps with google (their "classic" map, MyMaps, and GEP). It's very frustrating so I'm happy to entertain alternatives, even if the 5,000 or so waypoints are a little daunting to consider transferring anywhere without a bulk move option.... we shall see!

I'm not sure, but you may be able to find something similar on your app store

The closest I have found at the moment is fb messenger, Voice to text self (or in one case, mass-pm poor fellow explorer once back into cell phone signal range) with little hint reminders like nearest cross roads or mile marker.

Go back with GM or GE and update map file saved in drive which can be pulled back up later if directions are needed.

Not ideal but handy while driving, assuming VTT can understand my 'accent'.

I'm really happy with Google Maps.

Different colors/styles of pins and markers to designate different kinds of places (aboveground vs below, explored vs not, worth a trip back, demolished, etc.

It also lets me work in layers, though I wish it would allow for more layers. Currently I have a layer for in town, a layer of "Unconsolidated Outer Nonsense" that can really be anything, a layer each for two or three of the places I like to travel to and what can be done there, a layer simply for photography and camping.

Mostly I only use it for jotting quick notes about a place or to get directions there while I'm out.

It does everything I need it to really well, and I can open it in Google Earth for remote scouting, or whatever.

Indeed. Does this have the same level of customizability as Google Maps? I have my locations organized like so:

Color
Green= Confirmed to exist, fully explored
Yellow= Confirmed to exist, unexplored
Red= Existence unconfirmed

Shape
Pin= Currently abandoned
Diamond= Demolished or repurposed

Layers
Layer 1= Abandonments
Layer 2= Rooftops, cranes, drains, and tunnels
Layer 3= Demolished, repurposed, or mistaken for abandoned

I also have a little description attached to each location with details such as features, hazards, history, and date explored.

If this new app has all these functionalities, it would be nice to have them easily available. Otherwise, I'll stick with Google Maps.

This sounds a lot like my setup, except my green waypoints indicate the locations I really want to see the most. Only about 5% or so of my waypoints ever make it to green status.

This might be a bit of a late response on this thread but I think it's relevant- there's a really useful app called "maps.me". It's an offline maps app, it lets you put down location markers, and most importantly it notes some very particular things- like it has special icons which show the location of caves, mountain peaks, and mining sites, and it sometimes proves really helpful for tracking down abandoned buildings (searching something like "mill"). Generally good for finding urbex and other places fun to explore- I was in Germany for a while and used it to track down caves around town, and now use it to find abandoned mines in Colorado.
