When does a newly abandoned location really become safe to explore?

I just went and explored an abandoned hospital that was abandoned 9 years ago. The location is completely trashed now, it’s standing but it is in absolutely awful condition. This happened over 9 years and the building was originally left sealed.

Right after someone leaves a building, all the doors will be locked (probably miss a few here and there depending on the size of the building) and all of the stuff will be there and the building will still be in good condition.

My question is at what point do people stop caring for their abandoned property? Many of those buildings still have security cameras and security systems active and setting off a security system on a building of good condition is probably more serious in the eyes of the law than going in a building that is rotted and destroyed.

I know it depends on the situation but what do you guys use to determine whether it’s time to check it out or if the location needs a bit more waiting out?

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

In general, this might not be true for all, but a location will have high security (constant guards, video surveillance etc) if the building is being planned to be renovated, or the area is of high risk and they are having plans to demolish it soon.

My best answer would be to just scope out said location, if you are seeing constant guards and you notice the building is still in a pristine state, it might not be best to explore. If every door and window is locked, not a single widow is broken, I would not advise to go and smash a window to get into the location and set off alarms. At that point I guess you just gotta wait it out and see what plans they have for the place. You're an explorer, not a vandal

I'll let you know in about two months- there's a meat packing plant I want to explore once I return to Madison, and it shut down only a year ago. If it's open, then it will have been the most recently closed location I've explored. Most of the locations I've explored have been shuttered for at least four years.

I think a lot of it just has to do with scouting it out and getting lucky. Some places will have guards just at some spots on the outside but are still easy enough to get into.

"That sounds like a horrible idea! Let's do it!"
