An Exciting Destination
by Ground State Photos, on Flickr

I was rolling through satellite imagery a few years ago when I discovered this seemingly abandoned gem of a mansion in an extremely secluded area just outside of Georgina. It was quite a ways out of my usual driving area, but with a very long driveway and absolutely no neighbours, I knew I would have the entire place to myself.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one thinking this very same thing. The seclusion made it perfect for another type of visitor as well. It took me two years to finally get here, and it wasn't soon enough....

I look at that metal beam and can only imagine the intensity of the heat when this place was burning. Damn, I want to see what that fireplace looked like. Does anyone have photos of this location before it was destroyed? Two links (there were two different fires here a few months apart) are below:

Luckily I had a long list of other places to visit to make the trip worthwhile, and one of them had a bit of a comedic security measure. While Guelph area police work to stitch together clues, install cameras at existing abandoned locations, and appeal to the public for help, this well-hidden Pleasantville farmhouse sports its own on-site protector.

"A Failed Attempt" is one of my favorite shots I've ever seen from an abandoned house, simply amazing.

That's quite a compliment - thanks! I was really happy with the way the lighting turned out on that one and it is actually a rare shot that came right out of the camera without me meddling with it in post. Maybe with your comment, that's a lesson I should take heed of more often.

A lot of these are exceptional, in some cases making some otherwise mundane subjects look fantastic.

What kind of satellite imagery is that in the first picture? Why do the trees look computer generated?

Google Earth has started shooting in 3D, but so far only in select municipalities. It is fantastic because you can hold the mouse down and rotate the imagery and look at abandonments from all angles. On several occasions, I've actually planned POEs in advance after seeing gaping holes in walls on the computer. I was extremely surprised to find 3D imagery here though... so far they seem to be doing it more in the inner cities.

AHH I fucking love it when people come to my neck of the woods! It's the coolest thing when some of you folks that actually know a little thing-or-two about photography capture some of these places I've been to over and over. You guys always seem to think of and find the angles I never would and it's really refreshing seeing these places anew.

I've been to that second house you posted something like 15 times now - it was actually my first-ever "real" explore - and up until one of those last photos ("Tight Corner Overview") I didn't even recognise it! I think that's absolutely amazing.

Anyways, I was at that first house about a week prior to the arson. I'll post a couple shots for anyone that's curious what it looked like prior to the fire.

The garage was burned down a couple weeks later

It was in pretty rough shape.
