Outside From In
by Ground State Photos, on Flickr

After driving by the same QEW abandonments a thousand times for several years, I finally decided to make a dedicated trip to see what the area had to offer and to hopefully strike a few nonchalant places off my list.

First, a few strike-outs that did not permit entry this time around. The first one was a real surprise with the giant sheets of metal blocking all the ground-floor entrances. I thought for sure I was getting into this place, but Burlington sure doesn't mess around! A few other cliche QEW service road locations should be easy to recognize for anyone who has been through the area.

Maintenance workers in Deerfield sure are leery about photographers stopping and pulling in for a closer look at the old wreck in #4. I heard several electric carts slowing down for a closer look as they passed by me on the way to the maintenance garage.

I don't think Jaguar is going to be around much longer, as it is sitting in the middle of a massive Strabag construction zone. Just being on the property got me a handful of dirty looks from heavy machinery operators developing the land behind it. I didn't know what to make of these coin-op cages found in the rear. Can anybody fill me in on what they were for? Batting cages?

Next up came a new sports park abandonment that I don't think has been vacant for a full year yet. I noticed it last autumn and decided to try my luck... but perhaps too early.

I'm really interested in this next location, found buried in the middle of Bronte Provincial Park. Daily access to the park is unfortunately $17, but I talked the gate attendant into letting me in for free if I promised to just take a look around and leave within 15 minutes. I B-lined right out to this place to quickly check it for access, took a few shitty high-ISO shots, and made my way back out. I had hoped to return sometime for a better look, but the place is really dangerous inside and I'd rather settle on seeing some other photographers' shots, if you have any you could add to this thread. Also, what's the history on this place? I'm very surprised they'd leave it standing with very questionable attention to securing it. I got the distinct feeling the two POEs that I used have been available for quite some time.

I didn't think this next place was going to be much of anything, especially given the bareness of the exterior. But inside was one of the worst cases of youth destruction I've been to since the 2-storey white house beside the school board in Welland!

Finally, I most enjoyed this next place that Freaktography was kind enough to share with me last year. It took me a long while to get here, but I don't think it detracted from the experience. The house was a joy to slowly wander through and photograph.

All in all, it was a pretty good inner-city getaway on an unplanned weekday. Although I do like obscure rurex a lot better, you know what the best part of this was, in the middle of July, making the whole day totally worth it???.....

Yeah, they were batting cages.

Holy hell, GS...

I stumbled across the yellow house and the neighboring amusement park-esque thing in 2012 when visiting a friend but totally forgot where they were or what city they were in !! Thanks for the nostalgia.

That yellow house had explicit erotica written all over the upstairs walls, totally nuts.

Here's some photos from the interior of it.

Great collection of locations. I think I also gave you that first house with the metal over all of the doors way back when it was still furnished.

That poor house saw a faster decline than most I've seen, the local kids destroyed it inside amd out.

I followed your methods with this one, watching it weekly amd monthly, trying and failing until finally the local kids kicked in a door.

The owners sold it to a developer while they still lived there much to the chagrin of their kids, the land is being developed and I think they're trying to preserve the house.

Liked the unlikely contents of the suitcase. Great place to store the stairwell railing i guess. More than all the quite cool abandon pics is the refreshing scenes of nature. Thanks for those! Loved the Birds, Flowers and Bees!!

Well I don't know know about everyone else here but I recall a time in the late 1700's when a man named William Samsonite began placing stair rails in what was known as a Jolly Case.As we all know, that idea (which he was subsequently burned at the stake for) led to the invention of the suitcases that collect dust in our basements today. William Samsonite's history must be preserved and all of our travels must include stair case railings to pay homage to this great pioneer.

Ahhhh I remember you posting that now. I think it was you. No mistaking the 'sultry' paragraphs haha. Many, many years ago. I had no idea where the place was at the time.

I just hope that the one day that I'm the first one on the scene after a fresh POE and the authorities happen to show up, they're going to believe me when I tell them I wasn't the one to break in!

I'm a big wildlife guy - I like to always try to find something while I'm at these places. Glad you like them!

I had so much anticipation when I hoisted that suitcase and found that it was completely full. The house was in shambles, with everything picked through already, and I was SO hopeful that I had found something valuable that everyone else had missed. Oh well... at least it wasn't one of Luka Magnotta's missing collections.

Very cool post...27 and 33 are so odd! And what the hell in in that bottle in the kitchen shot? So many unanswered questions! Burlington places are so sketchy, but not as bad as the Hammer. I wouldn't venture into any place alone there.
