Exploring a 100 + Year Old Hospital (With Insights from a Past Employee)

Exploration from inside a 100+ year old abandoned hospital.

Consisting of several buildings all connected by a system of underground tunnels, this abandoned hospital dates back to world war 1 and the days of Tuberculosis.

While at one point in time there were many other buildings, some have since been demolished and sadly these buildings will meet the same fate.

I reached out to a former employee of this old hospital and learned that his family has generations of history with this facility.

I asked this individual, who also has a history of exploring, if he would like to accompany me on an explore, help me navigate the buildings and shed some light on the history.

His response was unexpected..

"I haven't been back since they forced everyone to move to different jobs. It was more than just a place to work for me, I had an emotional investment and I am not sure I would be able to see it as it is now, as it is in your teaser video in person. So I think I must decline your invitation, thank you though for inviting me.

I will however answer any questions you have and when you have your footage let you know what you're looking at if I remember. I appreciate too that you are documenting it all before it gets demolished."

He was kind enough to share some thoughts with me on the history and his experience here, you can read about his thoughts and experiences here towards the end of the video, and below.

I hope you enjoy this tour of this old abandoned hospital.

"To many this aged collection of buildings that stand in strange contrast to the myriad styles of houses and high rise apartments in the area seems a relic of the past that they can curiously see as they drive by and then quickly forget about.

This facility has been a permanent fixture to those of us in the city for ever. If you grew up here, you have been here, either as a patient in your early years or perhaps as an employee. It was always there."

"I was 18 when I started my job at this hospital. My Mother was more happy I had gotten the job than I was. I remember her waking me up one morning pounding on my bedroom door and screaming “YOU GOT THE JOB!!!” and she was all happy and me rudely in my selfish 18 year old way said, “awesome” and went back to sleep. It likely took the wind out of her sails."

"Over the first three years there Mom and I ate together often in the Cafeteria as we worked together and we visited my grandfather often who was a patient, and my Grandmother who was a volunteer there as well. This hospital was turning into my own little family community. I was fine with that. I enjoyed having my family around and I made a lot of friends, This was a very community orientated place. Workers worked together with their supervisors, and when the days were done, we all partied together."

Damn, what a treat. It's almost haunting to me how this place has stayed in pretty good shape after over a century. Also that's sick that you actually reached out to a former worker. I've always been interested in what it would be like to bring a former worker into an old facility to see them re-live their past. In terms of the pictures and video, really solid documentation. That last picture with the light spewing through the doors is dope, really gives off a creepy, nostalgic vibe.

Thanks man, the guy I talked to had very strong feelings about this place. It's too bad we weren't able to explore it together but his insights and experiences were great to read.

I looked at your blog post and Wow... What disrespect towards someone who did you a huge favor.

The gentleman in question posted photos from this place on the DB YEARS ago. So you definitely aren't the first person to "Crack" this location. The first to bring it to a wide audience, maybe.

Settle down on the self-aggrandizing glory commentary.

1 - how did I disrespect the guy? Here is a quote from him to me...

"Thanks for treating the site well. I appreciate it, I hope you enjoyed my writing. Yes its fine to use it"

2 - Where did I say anywhere that I was the first?

In your blog write up you constantly mention how the location is "brand new". When anyone who knows the guy you spoke to knows he did it first, YEARS before now. Thaddius's DB entries are 2007 and 2010. So this spot isn't "brand new" or "super fresh".

From your blog:

"Hot off the presses location"

"Yes, another brand new find conquered by RiddimRyder and I! Keep your eyes peeled for more from this super fresh spot!"

Sure...if you need to feed your constant hunger for drama and your need to bitch about everything I can see how you would draw that conclusion.

How does that make you feel? Did you accomplish what you were hoping for?

Or...maybe I'm just doing what I do and building some hype and excitement around something that was new and exciting to me?

I'll keep waiting for you to actually contribute something other than negativity.

So many here don't even try to grab good images or a story line.
We used to have a lot more really good explorers, shooters and styles of shooting here.
NickSan was one of my favorites. I learned a lot by looking at pics from people here the first couple years.
It's always a treat to see someone who puts some thought and effort into their art.

Just got done watching the vid. The vid helps connect the dots. Navigating complexes like these is daunting and you find yourself going in circles and such.
I was surprised how intact the buildings are, and with running water. The tunnels are way cool.
I've shot a couple untagged, not vandalized complexes and that's so fun.
One of the best threads I've seen here. That employee interview pushed it over the top and gave it a soul.

Well done

#22 is definitely my fav... funny how we go so far, and put so much effort into exploring and capturing a whole place, and sometimes it is the simplest ones that stand out the most. As for the 'regular' style shots, #19 is the winner. It has it all for me: great lighting, a sweeping view, just enough destruction to identify it as abandoned. What was the photographic style/name of those double-hallway/corner shots like #15? I thought I remembered you actually calling it something specific in a previous post a long time ago.

What a neat trip . . . Looks like there were several different eras that were left intact in the hospital; see some 70s, 90s, etc. Great presentation!
