A sub-zero stop early this morning while searching for owls to photograph near an abandoned farmhouse.

- 01 -
I cut through the barn on the way onto the property to rest for a moment after a snowy field hike and to check for neighbour attention. I found this porcelain doll hanging with her hair nailed to the barnboards.

- 02 -
A nearby resident turned me onto this old place after telling me they hadn't seen the Chinese property owner in many years.

- 03 -
I pulled in the driveway here one time previously and tried the door. It was unlocked but there was a farm tractor coming from the house next door. I promptly left, with a plan to return early the next day to try to beat the sunrise. Somehow, that was in 2015.

- 04 -

- 05 -

- 06 -

- 07 -

- 08 -
Although you can't tell from the photo, it was somehow colder up here in the only upstairs bedroom than it felt outside on the walk in. It was like an ice crypt. And I left the house this morning with 5 layers of clothing on. I wish that was an exaggeration!

- 09 -

- 10 -
The house was just a secondary treat. This is what I really came out this way for. Despite the long head tufts, this short-eared owl is a real rarity on the Niagara Peninsula and January is the peak month for finding them. For a bird not capable of different facial expressions, this one sure has a great look of disdain for having a camera pointed at it!

- 11 -
A final, fleeting shot of the hair-bondage-barn-doll on the way out. Note the terrifying swarm of orbs flooding in from outside; a clear sign that a whole gang of dead people were upset with my intrusion.

I was only there for about 45 minutes and I went through 3 camera batteries. Now mind you, that's also a combination of them getting a bit old now too, but one of them had zero power the moment I put it in. I was going to throw it in the trash when I got home but I just popped it back in my camera and it registers a full charge. Damn cold!

OWL !!!!!

Omg, I am so jealous. I suck at owl spotting (but I also am a huge baby and don't go out in the cold for longer than absolutely required). Great set! It's awesome how you always manage to make such interesting images out of what overall looks like a pretty boring house.

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

That's typical. Li's have a very long life span if it's a good manufacturer with the appropriate charger plus good user habits with them.
The Li's don't like anything below about 40F.
What I do is keep them in my pants or chest pocket, put one in the cam when ready to shot and rotate them out when they get cold.
If you keep shooting it helps keep the battery warm.

The pro cams with bigger batteries seem more immune to this. Guess you could wrap a heat pack next to the cam battery compartment.
Bagging the cam next to your body helps too. Adding a battery grip is another way to juice it up or an external power source.

Another reason to be in Texas. It's 60F here now.

You're absolutely right, it was a very boring house. After 3 years of waiting to get to it, I walked in and saw the bare rooms and thought, "Shit!... I'm taking some time here and searching for something to make it look good!"

It's one of the habitual phrases that I didn't even realize I typed. So for someone who doesn't really know any better, how could you tell that it wasn't. What's the giveaway?

There's my mistake. I've got them in my knee pocket on a pair of ski pants. I'll try out your suggestions and see how they fare in the coming weeks. In the meantime, I know somewhere you can shove yours to keep them extra warm!

BTW Skye, here are two more shots of the same owl that I think you'll like. Had a lucky break in the clouds to orange-up the first shot and then I flushed her a little for the 2nd shot.

Wuv the owl pics
Temp envy is a terrible thing Ground State...
I've heard some of our Canadian brethren keep their batteries in strange places

Be careful not to keep coins or any metal in the pocket with the bats; things could get way too hot fast. Always keep the covers on them when not in use and don't trust them to stay attached...

Great set Ground State! Kudos for braving the cold.
I like your use of shallow depth of field in the closeup shots. And the desaturated owl with yellow eyes is amazing!

What a cool little “bonus” adventure. The Chinese influence really makes it feel unique, and those owl shots! Bravo! Hopefully it was worth the sub-degree weather.
It is currently 10 degrees (F) here with a wind chill hovering around zero, which is absurdly cold for the state of Texas. I’m about to brave the frigid temps for a chance to check out a location I drove 6 hours for... We’ll see how long I last, lol.

Thank you for sharing this thread, I enjoyed it very much.
