Although I started this forum, you might be surprised to find that I am somewhat skeptical about the existance of ghosts.

How do I explain that "somewhat"? Basically... I believe that humans have a soul, and that it survives after death. Therefore I believe that the presence of ghosts is possible, even probable. But I'd like to have some proof. It doesn't have to be proof that others accept, just something I'm unable to explain away personally.

An example of a personal experience: I was dropping off something at the apartment of a former friend. At the time, we weren't on the best of terms, so I had made arrangements to drop it off while he was at work. When I got to his apartment, the place felt wrong. No better way to put it. Just heavy and nasty. I placed the item I was leaving on the floor of the living room (I didn't feel like dancing through the mess to reach anything else), when I heard a door slam from back in the bedroom. My first thought was that he was in the room and mad that I was there, so I called his name. In response the door began slamming repeatedly. I was rather bothered by that, so I turned to leave. As I reached for the front door, it slammed shut ... and was locked. Lest this sound too much like a horror film, I was the one who had locked it when I went in. I was still pretty bothered by the whole experience.

After that type of experience, you might think I'd believe wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, I can't. It was an extremely windy night. So the door slamming might have been caught in the wind. And the feeling could easily be attributed to the way I was feeling about this person due to our disagreement.

So I'm looking for proof in a desultory fashion. It will have to be something I experience personally. An image on a picture when I know nothing was there or an EVP when I know the conditions under which it was recorded.

I'm not convinced by TEH ORBZ!!!11!!1! Spots in a picture just don't convince me, as there are too many ways they could have occurred. Nor does random fog convince me. If I'm going to take a picture I believe shows a ghost, it'll be a true figure. And one I can see without having to circle it and strain my brain to find it.

That said, I'm not overly critical of other's experiences. I wasn't there, and as long as I think you're trustworthy I'll believe you did experience it. I may look for alternate explanations, but that's just my nature.

And I do love ghost stories. Truth doesn't matter to me there -- just the chance to deliver a good scare.

I don't know if I am more skeptical then you or not. Maybe when it comes to the ghost part but I have no problem believing in other things. I think I might jump there a little to quickly some times.

Although, I respect the fact that you are being logical, I don't think I would write it off this quickly. I think it was part of what I believe in so much. Maybe it is to quick and with out reason to go there but I have never felt or experienced something like I did with him.

I'm wondering what you mean... I've been scratching my head on this for a while.

Oh, I'm definitely not writing it off completely. I just wanted to acknowledge that it easily could be explained another way, and that's why it's not conclusive to me. Honestly I think it was spiritual in nature -- and I think that's what you're saying as well. But I don't have proof.

I thought this might be what you meant...

lol I meant to ask you on Wednesday, but got a little distracted. I knew the whole night there was something I was meaning to ask, but couldn't think what. Oh well.

Why do you think you jump too quickly, though?

I don't know. I just wonder. I mean with the feelings I get and all there are other reasons. I just... I don't know.

I see things from a scientific point of view. My theory is that most hauntings are A] the electromagnetic remnant of a once living intellegence still hanging around a place, or more commonly, B] a "recording" imprinted on an area that loops over and over.

Care to elaborate more?

I do subscribe to the "recording" theory to an extent, but it couldn't explain ghosts that actually do interact with their surroundings. I think it does explain some hauntings, however.

But what do you mean about "the electromagnetic remnant of a once living intelligence still hanging around a place"?

I've always believed in the supernatural, whether it is from cold spots to tree branches falling on me, I have this gut instinct that some actions cannot be explained. At Lakin State, for example, there are some instances that cannot be explained. From the bone chilling rooms with howling wind, restricted to one room that would follow you literally, from room to room, to tree branches falling on me, or the sounds of footsteps, it's enough to give me a chill down to my spine. Other people (see the Lakin post for more) have experienced other 'ghostly' hauntings as well.

But this belief in this does not hold true for all. I have seen many people take photographs, especially at dusty locations, and say that every orb must have been a deceased person (at a hospital) or a spirit or whatever.

Or rain drops. They are not spirits for the last time! I have a photograph from the Kaut House, that, when it was up, generated a lot of e-mails with people saying it was a ghost because there was the Kaut family cemetery next door.

lol I'm bored, so it seems I'm responding every other post.

Lil-trouble and I last visited Lakin with a guy who served as best boy on the movie Dark Harvest. He told us about some strange things that happened on one of the sets, which was right down the road from Lakin. (At an old farm with a family cemetary plot.) Apparently one night while he was running to Pt. Pleasant, the crew spotted and followed someone down the tracks that vanished after a short distance. And another night, the cemetary caught on fire.

Those stories are fuzzy memories. Perhaps if Lil-trouble reads this, she can correct me and add more.

Well, at least you didn't hear the history of Lakin's hauntings from two people who were drinking and then driving...

Well, in a lot of haunting instances, it's mostly the "recording" phenomenon. But there are cases, while not as common, where "ghosts" have interacted with it's surroundings, rather doing things over and over. In most investigations, where phenomena like this is encountered, a roving electromagnetic field is usually detected, accompanied by a "cold spot" where the field is, as if depleting the space it takes of it's heat. Also, some people manage to communicate with these things through electronic voice phenomena.

Fair enough -- the field would indicate the presence of something, along with the cold spot and the communication.

But that constitutes a description of what's going on, rather than an explanation. Somewhat like describing the wind through the motion of tree branches. What do you think the field, drop in temperature and possible communication indicate?

It indicates that we might very possibly be in the presence of an intellegent entity without physical form, possibly that of a deceased individual.

The latter part about it being a deceased person, is usually ascertained through EVP. Basically you set out a tape recorder with a fresh unused tape and just ask questions. Play it back (usually after being ran through a filter) and sometimes you get garbled replies to your questions.

I don't believe in anything, although i enjoy hearing and reading about them. It is possible to drag me out of this, i have changed my stance several times due to the number of incidents involving me or my family. but it changes in tune with religion, the idea of an afterlife, soul, etc and at the moment i'm strictly atheist.

Hey i never checked back, you're right but the most recent arguments i heard are atheistic and very strong, and you are right i am incredibly flaky, my political positions and any others change suddenly, i force myself to listen to opposing viewpoints and this tends to change my perspective a lot. in the past both my parents have had experiences with Ouija boards, ghosts and poltergeists and yet at the moment i don't believe, because the idea of an afterlife makes this one meaningless and that is something i don't wish to accept.

Why do you think that an afterlife would make this lifetime meaningless? Are you thinking that what you learn from this life, regardless of what it might be, won't be passed on into a possible next life?

You should read up on Socrate's thoughts with Meno and his young slave sometime.
