Good Headphones?

What recommandations would any of you have for good headphones in the $20-$60 range? I want something that covers the whole ear rather than just press against the ear, and definitely not earbuds.

I bought these when I was in highschool to listen to music on the bus but now I use them for lan parties. They go around your whole ear, they're comfortable, light, have a long cord, and sound really good. Wal-mart sells them for $19.99.

I can't recommend a particular model, but check this site out for some good reading:

Can you stretch that budget a little? If so, get the Sony 7506 or the V6 (not the V600, those are total crap). I swear, this is will the last pair of headphones you will probably buy. The sound is excellent (although some say the highs are a little harsh). The bass on these headphones is also amazing. You can't get any better for the price. Many audiophiles and audio engineers use them.

Here's a V6 model going for less (and it's a buy-it-now listing)

Yeah, I've got a pair of those also. Same as PAWolf said - comfortable and light. If put in say a backpack with some other stuff and bumped around, I have had one of the earphones(??) pop off of the center thingy - it isn't too hard to pop it back on, but eventually it can just break, which is why I'm on my second pair of these in 5 years or so of varied use.

I'm sure those Sony headphones Chaos is talking about are very nice, I've listened to music with similar high quality headphones, and they definitely have good sound quality.

edit: and you can get them at Target also for $20.

i had some older Koss cans similar to those which sounded fantastic, and cost about $60 when they were new (friend of mine just straight up gave em to me because he got some $120 Sonys) and they were great. Only problem I had was one arm on both headphones snapped off repeatedly and I eventually got sick of supergluing them back together. i might go grab those $20 myself actually...

I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M3X for closed backs, or the ATH-M2X for open backs. There are very reasonably priced, and have been around for a long time so their track record is pretty well proven. They also won't set you back too far if they happen to get stolen.

They also make some descent phono cartridges.

Grab those V6s at 53$. You will never look back. They dont fatigue the ear after a few hours of having them on your head too.

How about buying some kick ass speakers, and moving out of your parents basement?

I am just joking, I don't know if you live in your parents basement, or if you are at an appropriate age to do so.

The AKG headphones are incredible for the price. I've been using K-44's for over a year now and they're excellent.

As an audio engineer I highly recommend the Sennheiser 280 Pro headphones. They can be had for a very reasonable price and I think they sound better than the Sony 7506 and 7509's. They do an excellent job of blocking external noise and have good bass and good highs.

Yeah those are great too. I personally prefer the 7506 and have a pair, but headphones are a very personal thing. The 7506 have excellent bass response, and are well balanced. The high end can get a little loud, but they are non-the-less excellent.

After all, they are the standard studio can, and have been for quite a number of years.
