Canadian National, or Canadian Pacific?
< on 2/26/2006 11:48 PM >

When I was a kid I grew up with a Lionel Train set. My dad and I were avid collectors, and I've still got the whole lot of engines and rolling stock and track... just nowhere to build a layout.

Anyways, I don't remember how... maybe because it was the railroad that ran through my town... but I always liked CP more than CN, and I imagined all kinds of rivalry and hatred between them. My dad was into CN, but I preferred the bright red and white... so clean and patriotic.

So, my question to the Canucks out there (and any others that feel strongly about it) is - do you have any favouritism for either one of the two major railroads in Canada? If so, which one?

I'm personally all about CP. I work closely with the railroad and they've been nothing but nice to me when I've asked to come on board to have a look in the engines and what not. Besides, any of the rail yards near my house are CP, I've just grown up with them close by.

I've got to agree on that. CP's GP9u's are a lot nicer looking than CN's GP9RM's. Especially in the new beaver shield paint.

and the cn ones are always paired to a slug, the same job cp will send out 3 units to cns 1 with a slug, makes for an interesting job

I'll have to go with CP because they own the Delaware & Hudson and I can here the Bridgeline trains go by at night.

For me, its Canadian National all the way, but i am not a fan of the Soup Noodle paintscheme in use for my entire life!!!

My freelance shelf layout at home is loosly 1950's CN, Steam with Green and Gold Diesels.

I am also biased because my parents live on the CN Halton Sub, so thats where i do my trainwatching. The CPR Galt Sub is nearby too, but in over 5 years of my family living there and me trainwatching on Visits, the CPR hates me and i almost never see any traffic, where i am guaranteed to catch copious amounts of traffic in CN almost every time!!!

Later

I worked on a CP section (Albert Canyon) for about 18 months near Revelstoke, BC in the late 70's, so I guess I was always geared towards CP.

In recent times though, I have been reading up on a lot of CN stuff so I guess I am on the ledge these days.

Certainly the 19th century stuff about the Grand Trunk is pretty interesting. But that was the "pioneer" days of railroading and GTR was already very well connected to the US.

It is mindboggling that the Grand Trunk turned down the government offer to build coast to coast in Canada. CP received oodles of cash and unbelieveably large tracts of land for their part in the deal. Seems to me if there was a turning point for these two railroads that was it.

It would probably be still called Grand Trunk and that will fall into one of those what would have happened if rhetorical categories.

I chose #3, only because I don't support Canadian railways. Only Southern Pacific RR, and local abandoned narrow-gauge railways.

CPR, ever since my first model Crapmann F7 painted as a CP FP9. I still mainly collect CP model stuff.

Of course, CN was the only show in my old town when I started migrating to the tracks on a regular basis. And there was usually an abundance of foreign RR power running through on CN. Each RR has their own unique features.

Oh yeah, I've seen CN jobs with 3 GP9's. Always nice to listen to when the hog puts those puppies to work in notch 8!

Grand Trunk Western, followed by the Toronto, Hamilton and Buffalo Railway. Since those are both defunct now, CN all the way. CP is CN's little bitch.

And the THB was a partnership between the great New York Central and Canadian Pacific.

And RaiGuy88, I think SP had a werid relationship with BCRail...

CN... I have a thing against CP because an ex girlfriend worked for them, and I really fucking hate her. However, if she was run over by one of their trains, I'd totally like CP more, but at the present time, they're signing her paycheques. But for now, every time I see a CP, I'm reminded of her.

I have to say I am a CN Guy myself. Never lived near CP lines, and when I did try to watch CP trains, I was not greeted nicely. I lived beside CN lines all my life, and I suppose I just got used to seeing their trains. That being said, I do not hate CP. I think in a way, both compliment each other, and in turn make Canada great

That being said, the article from National Geographic entitled Canada's Highway of Steel features CP Rail, and is my favorite National Geographic article of all time.

I have always had a thing for CN. I grew up in one of their yards and spent way too much time there. Right before I moved out of my mom's house, she moved to a house with the Chatham Sub running through her back yard. Also, I find the CN crews to be friendlier than the CP crews. My favorite short line has to be Essex Terminal Railway.

I was a kid on the CP side of the river. Both Cp and CN track share in the fraser valley for two way traffic now. One of my first UE's..I was 8 or so...was a CP building..a museum now. First train I ever rode was CP, I was 12, skipped school..had no idea what I was doing, rode the knuckle, was a dumb kid.
