10% UER member discount on Quark lights at 4Sevens!
< on 10/4/2009 2:20 PM >

AnAppleSnail reports that 4Sevens now gives UER members a 10% discount on their Quark lights - use the code UER10.

Woohoo!

That's what I get for jokingly searching for '4sevens' here and finding that it probably is really him - even more temptation to grab a quark. Now, the age-old question - AA or CR123? 1 or 2 cell? Or wait 'till AAA?

I'm thinking AA for sure...

Ha! Well there you go, I had no idea he was on here! And since 2006, no less.

Well, I do like my Quark 1xCR123 a great deal - it's just so nice and small. Only thing is, I have the version with the clip, which on that one model is non-removable, and I'm not sure I'd go that way given the choice again.

The good thing is that (if I understand correctly) the 1xCR123, 1xAA, and 2XAA lights all have the same head, so you can buy any one of those, then buy extra body tubes to support the other battery configurations. Presumably the upcoming 1x18650 will be compatible with those, too. The 2xCR123 head is different, made for higher voltages.

I keep meaning to get a 2xAA body for my Quark, actually.

I didn't know they were that lego-able. Hopefully some other lightfans will join the excitement here d-:

Let me count voltages on my fingers
(0.9V~4.2V total) head
AA 1.2-1.7 nominal
AAx2 2.4-3.4 nominal
CR123 3.7v nominal (4.2 max)
18650 3.7v nominal

2CR123 7.4v nominal (8.4 max)

For people wondering "Why are these nerds so excited?" I'll cover basics.
10-year guarantee
Square threads are more durable
Low-low setting (.2 lumens) for keeping night vision
Low comes on first
Pretty damn bright (90 lumens on 1 AA, 170 on 2AA and CR123) for finding the end of the tunnel

The low low is just fantastic.

Low comes on first

Mine is the tactical version, where two modes are programmable to the various settings available. So, it can be set to come on in low, max, or whatever! I really like the interface.

Nice accessories packaged with it, too - I leave the lanyard attached all the time these days.

Hrm, I just tried to buy a tactical 1xCR123A with no tailclip, but when I enter the code "UER10" at the checkout, it comes back as invalid. I'll probably buy one anyway but the 10% would be nice...

I've messaged him here to see if he can fix it. Hm. Do I email the real 4sevens web site?

I'll join the excitement! You've seem how crappy my lights are-- I suffer from major indecision when I try to figure out which ones I should upgrade to. This is a pretty good deal, these seem like really nice lights. I may just have to spring for one.

Mr. Chow has made $50 off me. It turns out 10% is enough for me to upgrade. My friend dropped my EDC in a large dark construction site. Wrapping a popped wire onto a paper clip I folded onto the old solder nib is not recommended for the only more-than-3-lumens light you're carrying. Hopefully better construction and a usable lanyard will help with avoiding that silliness in the future...

The Quarks seem to me to be what the Fenix LD20/PD30 etc should have been by now - I go back to my LD20 and bemoan the user interface and overly-bright low setting.

Waiting patiently now to see how the 4Sevens AAA and MC-E lights end up!

Re: 10% UER member discount on Quark lights at 4Sevens!

I got a 2AA tactical neutral white - with hopes of getting the 1AA tube if the 5.8" length is annoyingly overlong for daily carry. I've been curious about the neutral white color for quite a while, and having 2 modes available instantly (Left bezel, right bezel) aside from the regular sequence will be handy.

For those who aren't sure what to make of all this, here's the thought process:

Tailcap - back, switch on light
Body - holds batteries
Head - has the LED and electronics
Bezel - the front of the light (front of the head)

It's handy to have a wide range of light. Lumens are essentially exponential, so that "Twice as bright" is much more than twice the lumens. .2, 3.5, 18, 70, and 170 represent a wide spread of light settings. In pitch dark, .2 lumens is plenty to see obstacles by. 18 is nearly always enough for drains except tarred CMP or nasty floors. 70 and 120 or 170 lumens are pretty damn bright. Runtime is pretty good and AAs are cheap and easy to carry - I'm likely to use the 18 and 70 lumen mode, which is going to be 6-20 hours of lit exploring on a pair of batteries. Broadly speaking, 10 lumens is for reading, 20 lumens is good for casually walking paved areas, 40 for hiking in woods, and 100 for searching.

The interface for your light will make good specifications into a good light. The Tactical interface lets me pick which two settings are available with one click - it's a programmable 2-mode light. I have never liked the umpteen-modes-and-blinker ones where you have to click exactly 13 times to get to the level you wanted. I also want a "it definitely will not come on in screaming high mode" guarantee. If you don't want to deal with choosing two modes, the Regular will click through in order (with loose bezel):
Moonlight » Low » Medium » High » Max » SOS » Strobe » Beacon
And twisting the front will give you moonlight or Max on the next click.

I picked AA because they are common, commonly rechargeable, and less potentially-hazardous than lithium battery pairs. Also I'm anticipating an 18650 body for this Quark head, and have tons of AA batteries. The 2xAA, AA, and 1x CR123A light use the same Quark head currently - so you could buy one and some extra bodies and have your choice - the beauty of lego lights.

Long post is long - hopefully it's informative too.

4sevens has plenty of new lights coming out soon. I cant wait to get my Ti Quark 123*2! Theyve got a multi-level MC-E light coming out in the next couple weeks along with the Preon AAA light (and there will be some XP-G R5's in there as well) Not to mention we found out they are going to be making a Quark 123*2 and AA*2 XP-G R5 turbohead! There has also been some mention of an 18650 body tht will be compatible with the quark line but im not sure about that one!

4sevens is an awesome company and they stand by their products 100% David is also a great person and will tease the hell out of you when it comes to info on new lights ;)

Ordered! I decided to go with the neutral tint, should be fun. Funny how it only takes a 10% discount to convince me to buy one of these... Although I have to say the free international shipping (I've been stunned by shipping costs since I've moved to Canada) is nice too.

I knew about the 18650 body, but the head is news to me! I wonder if the clip on my CR123 version will preclude me from using the wider body? I might be willing to grind it off if I have to...

Go down to post #1022 and that is the pictures. Post #1024 is where David admits to the light and even says it will be available in October! I dont think it will be sold as the head alone and its only being made in the 2 cell format's.

Just ordered a spare 2xAA body tube for my Quark... and the 10% discount applied successfully! I was half-expecting it to apply only to complete lights, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Candlepowerforums search, pick one.

And here's some pictures I took. I don't have an pictures of me using it, but it's pretty natural to change the brightness options on the Tactical. 170 lumens is very bright, and the light drops to lower levels (longer life) when your batteries are going out.
