At the Drive-In
< on 9/6/2015 3:00 AM >

Nearby drive in that's been closed for 20 years. Just an immense (hollow) rectangle that served as the screen and admission area, and also had the projection/concession building in the back. This was the pre-radio kind with speaker stands for each car.

Back side of the projection screen

Chipped paint on the front of the projection screen.

There was some playground equipment as well as burned tires in front of the screen

The projection house:

5.

6.

Speaker stands:

A bad shot of the interior of the screen building, it doesn't give the immense sense of scale of the immense hollow rectangle

That shade of blue on the wall in pic #5 is really beautiful, I love it!
What a cool little place - I love the variety of locations we've been seeing on this forum lately.

Cool location. I love drive-ins, too.

In regards to the size of the screen, there are at least three that I know of that have homes inside the screen tower. The Skyview in Marion, VA has an equipment company on the ground floor and apartments higher up in the screen. The Hiland in Rural Retreat, VA has been converted into a nursery, and the owners' live in the screen. The Sunset in Shinnston, WV still shows movies, and the owners' there also live in the screen.

Neat find, Catdog! Great amount of overgrowth around the projection house!

Teeter-totters were an early lesson on whom to trust for my generation. You seldom see them now.

Every drive through I have been to, including active ones has see-saws. Both funny and creepy. Nice photos!

It's sad to see these relics of the past abandoned, especially since the 5 drive-in in Oakville is always so packed. Great post!

Thanks Skye_Ann!

There are at least three that I know of that have homes inside the screen tower.

The only ones I've seen have had flat (concrete or wooden) screens, but that' neat.

Teeter-totters were an early lesson on whom to trust for my generation.

LOL

Great amount of overgrowth around the projection house!

It was kind of annoying to photograph.

Yeah, I can see that. It's a love hate kind of thing - the growth brings it closer to being immersed in nature, but it's certainly hard to capture in return.

WOW! Hey, I was there about 5-6 years ago and it looked pretty much the same... inside was a little cleaner, and overgrowth not as bad but otherwise the same. Thanks for posting!
