NSFW police scanner help

I need help finding and chosing a scanner to follow cops around and freelance for the local newspapers. Lately ive been cruising around following cops on call. I got lucky today. What do i need to buy so i can sit on my ass at home and just grab my gear and go?

Since this is a private forum, heres my vulture shot of the day. I sold my less graphic photos of the incident to the newspapers.

But the 396T can't decode NAC like the Pro 106 can

And the Pro 106 can also get data from RR.

I've had both, and personally I find the 106 better at both p-25 and IMHO- easier to program.

I do like the size of the 396 thou.. Thats the only thing I dislike about the 106.

Well if you want to stick with GRE, buy the PSR-500 (or 600). Personally I'd still stick with the 396T, since I grew up with Uniden scanners, though I've been thinking about getting a PSR-600. Also, using bctool you can import data from RR.

Win500 can program the PSR-500 and PRO-106, which are basically the same scanner, except firmware is different between but all have the same feautres.

LAPD uses P25, so he needs NAC decoding

I'm not familiar with NAC as both Milwaukee City and County use something much less sophisticated. But, I have read that the newer model of the 396 can do it: BCD-396XT. Is that true?

Well, whatever you use, Bearcat is the way to go. I use the old BCT50, and it is awesome. I can still get the digital freqs, but not sure about those new scramble units (Oakland PD uses them). Haven't tested that yet.

I've used Rat Shack stuff in the past. The really good units are from the true Radio Shack/Realistic/Tandy models from the 1990's. Those were good. But these days, the quality has gone way down, and highly recommend to stay away from there unless you need an emergency part or something.

As a user of the current generation RadioShack radios, they are made by GRE and they are pretty top notch. Only issue I have with them is using them on VHF with a high gain antenna as it overloads the radio; easy fix is to turn the attenuator on and I am golden. Its a well known problem, but an easy fix.

And yes, the 396XT does support NAC decoding, but it took Uniden a while.

The one thing I do like about the PSR500/PRO106 is the fact you can set it to dump trunking channel control data from the data port and with the programming cable have it work with UniTrunker to log control channel data without using a discriminator tap.

LAPD uses P25 conventional repeaters with NAC for a "tone".

Milwaukee City/County will be moving to a P25 trunking system from their current analog setup; its in testing right now.

No I know the purpose of NAC. I meant I don't know how it works as part of the P25 protocol. I'm familiar with radio networking. The city and county are separate in terms of their radio nets. The county is working with the state to join their budding P25 network. The city has its head up its ass with OpenSky.

I looked up NAC, so you don't have to bother explaining it.
