| | | Posted by drawnaway Unfortunately, the new resort will have the same fate as the old one, along with many others like the Pines and Grossingers, to name a couple. The area in which these resorts were built just doesn't draw a crowd anymore. Driving through these towns, one will notice that there are all sorts of camps and resorts that are left to rot because they can't stay in business. I don't know why the town of Lake Kaimesa (sp) thinks that spending the money to rebuilt and reopen will be worth it in the end....
| There are a ton of abandoned hotels/camps/bungalows in the area, that did fail miserably. However, there are still a lot of hotels, motels, camps, and bungalows that have stayed in business, and do pretty well. It's not that businesses catering to travelers CAN'T survive, they just didn't survive becasue people weren't willing to accept change. Now, some 20 years later, the oweners of these places do accept change, and that change is what will hopefully make the new hotels more successful. For example - the Grossinger's were asked many times to serve non-kosher meals to large conventions and groups. They flat refused - and lost business. Now, the hotels would offer blowjobs if it meant getting guests - they are smarter now, about what people want, and more open to accomidating people. The new hotel at the Concord is said to be a 200 room luxury spa - catering to golfers, and well to do spa-seekers. Well, this is much different than the 1500 room former hotel, that was designed for guests in the 1950's. I think it's a great idea, and will likely do well - with or without gambling. So is it worth it in the end....I'm sure if I owned a 20 million dollar abandoned resort I'd do whatever I had to so that I could recoup my money. Well, I'd leave it abandoned actually, but if someone normal owned it....

I won't sell short on the Catskills just yet, especially because the suburbs are still spreading North from NYC. But the resort industry without casino gambling is mostly a legacy now. There may a resort industry there for some time to come, but I certainly wouldn't want to own any of those hotels.

| | | I was there with Orion and a couple people over the summer, and we drove through one of the golf courses, parked in an old parking lot, and this man and his sons rode up to us on bikes (they were riding past), and he asked if we were going to go inside. He said that he worked for the Concord, and that if we wanted to go inside, we should be careful. We went in, took lots of pictures (which I will post shortly), and had a good, albeit depressing, time. Getting in was no problem, getting out was a little tough as some of the doors are chained up from the outside. [edit]And yeah, LOADS of shells and bullet holes in the walls.
