Real time intelligence is not. I know it seems really fucked up but thats unfortuantly how the military still works. If intell could just be given over people would loose there jobs.

If oil was the only thing that we were after, wouldn't it have just been easier to invade Canada? Just a thought...

Actually it is.

The government wants the military to do everything (anti-ship, anti-sub, anti-aircraft, fly jet fighters, drive tanks and APCs, etc.) yet they don't get enough funding to do any of it. On top of that the politicians prefer to deny that they are even an armed force (peacekeepers only), which is why they changed the Canadian Armed Forces into the "Canadian Forces", they still carry weapons but the name isn't as mean.

We need to figure out what we want our military to do and fund them to do those things well.

yea, i know, that whole HMCS Chicoutimi incident proved that to me. the Canadian Gov'mt could have bought 10 state of the art Hunter-Killer subs but instead they got bargain basement used subs from the UK, and didn't even hire their own engineers to inspect them before they were purchased, but hey whats one mans life compared to a few bucks eh?

Why buy best when you can buy British (no offense to any Brits here).

But I hear the British themselves are buying Dutch and German ships to replace their older ones, and many forces in Europe replace their ships after a certain amount of time before they get too old.

In defence of the Canadian military, the amount of training they get makes most American soldiers look like kindergarteners with guns.

most definitely, the problem is the equipment. there is only so much you can do with a rusty pocketknife and a rabid beaver ;)

As far as I know we use the Fabrique Nationale C-7, which is similar to the M16 (which I think is made by the same company). The regulars get sort of half assed kit, but the JTF2 gets some nice stuff.

We could be doing worse; at least we aren't running around with AKs and RPGs while wearing sandals.
