Recent trip to the Brickworks

Recently I took at trip to the brickworks. The first visit was just a quick survey of the area, the second was a real exploration. Entrance into the buildings is quite easy actually. I sadly didn't bring my camera with me.

Looking through other pictures though I can comment on a couple of changes to the area. A lot of the machinery that isn't bolted to the ground or built right into the place is gone. The chain link fence Av snapped a picture of is no where to be found. I imagine they've used it for security.

My suggestion if you visit it to walk down the middle row of kilns in the large room to the west. Look up and you'll see a large portion of pipes falling down onto the catwalks. Its a little disturbing but also quite exciting.

Oh, and if you do decide to go, watch out for High Schoolers getting drunk outside of the buildings. They didn't bother us at all, but they did make quite a lot of noise. Also beware the frozen puddles on the ground, they make for wonderful slipping places.

...For here, millions of mixed shades and shadows, drowned dreams, somnambulisms, reveries; all that we call lives and souls, lie dreaming, dreaming, still...

I went yesterday (8/02/04) as I was heading to my grandmas house, so I decided to pop in.

I wasn't very prepared as I only had my camera (no tripod), no mask, no flashlight.

I just hopped the fence and went for a quick look around, and went inside the bottom of the Valley tower thing.

Sorta a scouting mission, as it was way to farking cold to spend any time anywhere other than a large fire yesterday.

Every time I drive past there, there are always cars parked under bright lights, I only drive by at night though.

Don't be put off by the cars. There's plenty of them there all the time.

exactly, why are they there, and who do they belong to, and also the fact that where they are parked is pretty well lit up, does that mean the brickworks still has hydro?

One of the buildings is still active. Rarely. It's used as (I think) a community center, even though it's pretty small. It's completely seperate from the rest of the Brickworks, only linked by a corrugated metal roof and part of a wall.

The marshy park area behind the Brickworks is a popular spot to go walking and it's been known to be the spot for occasional parties and, so I hear, even weddings. Seeing cars parked around the Brickworks (even at night) isn't rare at all, nor is it anything to be concerned about. Seriously.

Actually part of the Brickworks is in use during weekdays since it is owned by the City of Toronto so there will always be cars/trucks parked under the roof with all the lighting but don't worry about it. It is best to go on a weekend so there won't be any workers in the active area. Since the area is popular for dog walking, you can park in the public parking lot... walk towards the back where the chimney is and hop the fence... And you're in and no one even notices. It is so easy but just try to go outside the typical business hours so those working in the active part won't see you.

Good advice, but really, any time of the day, any day of the week, it's okay as long as nobody's looking. After all the times I've been there, I've become totally nonchalant- nobody really cares about the Brickworks.
