I love that ladder pic! We saw a ladder like that hanging out of the top of a stope in the AJ mine, but my camera battery had died by then. I'm still kicking myself for not getting any stope photos there

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Nice photos dtewsacrificial! I enjoy rappelling, so those long drops would be a lot of fun. It would be ascending back up that wouldn't be quite as much fun.

Like you, I have very few of myself since I am the one who carries the camera(s). I'd rather be behind the camera anyway.

Thanks Abby!

Ironically, the story to the pic of the Englestead drop-in was that my partner forgot the pull-strand on top, and realized this about 1/6 into the rap. All I hear is barely-intelligible swearing. It took him about 20 minutes to lock-off, get into ascending mode, and ascend back to the top to retrieve the rope bucket containing the pull-strand.

pretty cool video and location!
Whats with the weird sandals the guy in the blue shirt was wearing to ascend? and nobody was wearing gloves? Rappelling without gloves in hugely stupid in my book, especially in an urban/industrial setting. I mean we spend hundreds of dollars on equipment then cheap out on a $30 pair of gloves? even a $5 set from home depot is better than nothing.

People from a climbing or canyoning background would default to rapping without gloves.

I dunno I climbed for many years but always wear gloves when rappelling....Ive seen friends burn the skin off their palms from rapping even short drops without gloves. of course a rack affords more "hands-off" friction control than a figure 8 or STOP, but even still. The risk of getting snagged or cut in an industrial setting with all kinds of sharp, rusty metal edges would also be quite high. personal preference tho I guess.

This is a really awesome video! I would love to go there one day! Thanks for sharing.

I'm going to throw out a few minor rope safety tips:

  • Always try to put your anchor as high as possible, which will make the lip easier to negotiate. Lower lips like that are much more dangerous. Of course sometimes it's just not possible; I don't know what the situation is there. Personally, I will go to great lengths to avoid having a lip like the one in that video.

  • Don't move or open that break hand! Ever! That hand should stay in the same position and serve no purpose other than braking, even when negotiating a difficult lip.

  • When ascending, tie a backup lanyard from your top ascender back down to your main biner. This allows that second ascender to act as a backup attachment to the rope.

Great smooth technique on your frog ascent at the end! Looked very fast and efficient.

I've heard a lot of people say this, but I personally hate gloves. I feel that, when using equipment as small, precise and finicky as a lot of climbing gear, you want to have the maximum possible dexterity in your fingers. Just personal preference though really.

I find that's where fingerless gloves come in. Your palms take most of the friction during a rappel and your fingers are then open to adjust gear.

Gloves are good for getting out of the hole.

had some fun at a local bridge last weekend. It's undergoing structural repairs and they've built an entire 2nd roadway under the main surface. I've been popping in to follow the construction for a while now and it's amazing to see the whole process unfold. They actually built the secondary roadway at water level and jacked it up over 70ft using enormous hydraulic cyliners. It's all steel & 14x14 wooden beams....strong enough to drive bulldozers and aerial platforms on.

Nice photos of your "night ops"!

One point though for anyone reading this thread, Walmart rope is NOT safe to climb or descend on!! Honestly, if you can not borrow the right gear and can't afford to buy it, then you should really postpone vertical exploring until you can get the right stuff.

I realize that we are an adventuresome group, but vertical requires the proper gear and adequate training. Really.

Been lectured on it countless times.

    Also, I now have
    >300' of rated static rope
    >150' of dynamic rope
    >$500 in climbing hardware, not counting rope.

I almost got hurt twice that night but it wasn't the rope that did it. Awkward positioning trying to drop down, while upside down, from the ladder, I found myself experiencing free fall twice that night.

The first time, I was on an ATC and had to do this kind of sideways inverted drop to get off the ladder and not a standard rappel. The amount of force on my brake hand and the direction of force changed when I went to free hang. When I started dropping because I was not applying enough brake pressure, I made the worse mistake of trying to pull up on the rope. I was left with had about 1.5" to assess the situation and figure it out.

Started to call out to my friends, but realized they were too far away to be able to possibly get back and catch me, or at least break my fall. That realization occurred simultaneously with my brain immediately jumping to shift 10's of thousands of useless pieces of information to the one piece that could save me, a post on this forum no less. "The rope goes up and it will do nothing, something has to lock down on the rope." IIRC I even yelled "LOCK DOWN!" while doing it. A more seasoned and less exhausted climber would probably have corrected the mistake automatically and/or not made it in the first place.

Second time, I said fuck the ATC and tried a Figure 8 twisted around and dropped me and after not making the same mistake of not braking, I applied maximum brake pressure to no effect. I ended up grabbing the rope with both hands and slowing my descent, landing surprisingly softly with both knees bent, while melting through my gloves and burning my hands.

Now I have a grigri and a bunch more experience. I just keep in mind the lever on the grigri is to go down and even if I pulled the lever, as long as my brake hand is on the rope applying pressure, it won't drop me. Yes, I've tested this.

    My preferred rig:

    (2010-ish long hair era)

    And there's this:

I think this experience, combined with my near identical response in similar situations really put basejumping onto my agenda. If anything my brain moves too quickly for my body to react. Combined with fact I pretty much never freeze. It's always fight or flight, figure it out, react, and commit to the path. But you know us edgeworkers are always thinking we have what other people lack...

It wasn't meant to be a lecture, especially to you. After all you are here to tell us about it. My thought was to deter others from thinking that cheap rope was a good way to get started in vertical.

My next rope will be a 300' like yours. I have two 200' and one 100', but we have a few long drops where the extra length would be necessary.
