I was looking at some arborist techniques for placement as well as basic biner/knot blocks and should have everything sorted out - unfortunately some recent legal trouble has grounded me so I haven't been able to do anything more than practice in the park.

oh man...what did you do this time?

It's a misunderstanding! I didn't push them! they jumped! I swear!

In all seriousness.... why is it the crappiest location, wide open, in the middle of a crappy neighborhood even by Detroit standards with the ceiling lying on the floor in moldy piles - is the place I get my first "Entering Without Owners Permission" charge?

I am Crypton and most of you already know me.

Rope work got me very interested during MAMU IV last year and I have been contemplating learning it ever since. Finally, a month or so ago, nonconmat decided to visit Seattle and I got my first practice lesson. More learning to come!

Hi everyone. Haven't been around the site in a while (busy with work and whatnot) but in light of a cross country move I have found myself in new exploring territory. My previous stomping ground was Ohio which is pretty damn flat when your interests include climbing. I enjoyed exploring industrial structures, drains, and utility tunnels around and under Columbus, Ohio. For about two years I worked at a rock climbing gym and took up gym/sport climbing and a bit of non-technical caving that at most required a hand line. In both my experiences climbing and caving I was always with very skilled trip guides. It was very fun applying the new things I learned from such a wide variety of people to my personal exploring escapades.

Anyways, I am now located near Twentynine Palms, California which is situated conveniently next to Joshua Tree which I hear has a load of climbing and exploring opportunities. Haven't been on a rope in a while so I suppose I will start from scratch and build my way back up as I migrate the rest of my gear from Columbus. If anyone around these parts is putting anything together after the holidays feel free to contact me, I've probably got more gear than experience to bring along but I never pass up an opportunity to learn something new from the people here.

Welcome to the left coast! It sounds like you enjoy the outdoors so there is a lot to see and do in your area. A lot of folks love Joshua Tree National Park. Since it sounds like you like to spend time underground, you may be interested in mine exploring. There are quite a few folks in L.A. and San Diego who are active in mine exploring. With your climbing & caving background, it would be a natural transition.

You can check out these websites if you are interested.

My website:

Some explorers close to you:

Mine explorers out of Salt Lake City:

I just looked at my mine location database and there are a TON of mines in your area. I don't know if they are open or if they have been gated/blasted/dozed but you have a lot of exploring possibilities down there!

Hello! Not really sure how I got added to this board. Just kinda popped up today. Seems pretty dead which makes it a little more odd. I'm fairly inexperienced but I do have all my own gear and understand enough about it and weight transfer to do simple things like changeovers with ease. I've yet to tie an anchor though. I think learning to do that and learning some new knots will be my next step.

I think you know someone who can work with you on knots and anchors. Rigging is a useful skill when heading underground. I spent a lot of time reading 'On Rope" and other caving books to understand the basics. Since 5hen I have been mentored by Tony and developed my skills. While I will never be a master rigger, I can set up safe anchors, basic haul systems, and have a pretty good understanding of appropriate knots.

Haha yeah, Therrin has been helping me with vertical access. Though I'm a bad student and we usually end up arguing so most of what I've learned, I learned from the chairman of our local NSS grotto in Illinois. He set up rope courses in his trees. Last time I was there I did a long loop re-belay. I actually really enjoy trying new stuff like that and trying to mentally work out and problem-solve the steps and weight transfers. I might have to look into that book you mentioned. Thanks!

Look at the top of this fourm for a thread named "Going Vertical - getting started on the right foot" The 10 part caving series is one of my favorite tutorials. Lots of good info.

Haha I've been trying to revive this board for quite a while. So whenever I see anyone mention that they do rope work, I add them to the board. Welcome!
