These people exist?

Transport 2000 in the UK is a very much anti-car group there. I'm all for having better transportation options but jeez, cars are still apart of the picture especially in the UK which is the 2nd most car dependant nation in Europe.

The Humane Society estimates that more than one million animals are killed every day on US roads. It has been estimated that motor vehicles kill more animals than the fur trade and animal experimentation industry combined, and more deer than deer hunters.

Despite these appalling statistics BBC TV continues to broadcast a prime time motoring programme aimed at young people called Top Gear. The programme is presented by media personality Jeremy Clarkson.

Lobbying group Transport 2000 recently accused Top Gear of:

- Glamorising speed and failing to make the connection with danger on the roads.
- Encouraging an obsession with unnecessarily powerful and heavily polluting cars.
- Through using Jeremy Clarkson as presenter, with his distinctive image, encouraging a ‘yobbish’ attitude on the road.
- Not focussing on responsible driving, ‘greener’ cars, road safety or the need to cut car journeys
- Using ‘macho’ themes of speed and power, and failing to cover the interests of women

these are the same fucks that would have us riding bicycles everywhere... kill them! Kill them ALL!

I'm sure there will be an episode to prove otherwise!

But yeah, bikes suck. I had a friend who was obsessed with his bike and always said "Yeah, my bike is worth more than your car."

Great. Come see me if it's raining/snowing/dark out or you need to go farther than 25 miles. And nice shorts.

My father bikes to work, but here's the thing, its practical for him as he only goes about 4 miles one way and its all in suburban areas, which I think we all agree is too short for him to drive even the most fuel efficient car to and from work 5 days a week and have the car sit in a parking all day. And his bike is a bike he got a local bike shop on clearance for under 200.00 that isn't anything fancy.

Right now even, I'm not driving all the way to work; I'm going about a mile to a light rail park and ride then taking light rail, which drops me off about less than a block at my work location. I get about 15 MPG in the Jeep and its about 15 miles one way to my work. So instead of spending 2 gallons a gas at 4.00 a gallon (8.00 round trip-ish) to go to work, I can spend 2.30 one way (4.60 round trip), cutting my transportation costs in half so I can spend more money on like oh, more adventures in the Jeep and what not. I think we all would agree thats more fun!

But I'm in Portland, the city where we have a very interesting transportation policy that tries to favor everyone from the bikers to the car commuters. I think its nuts to try to bike commute in Toronto just because the city isn't setup for it.

I'm basically all for the most practical solution for every individual's own transportation.

heh, where i live, you DRIVE EVERYWHERE. For example... my commute to work is 36 miles round trip.
trip to the local market? down the mountain, 10 mile round trip
trip to the local wally-world? 40 mile round trip.
nearest mall? 110 mile round trip
nearest chevy dealer? 25 mile round trip.
doctors office? 25 mile round trip

is it no wonder all the cars here are high mileage?
and forget about commuting on a bike... maybe if you're Lance Armstrong, i'd consider it.

Belleville has a pile of idiots on Bixis too but they seem to look more like welfare recipients who lost their licenses for DUI.

Portland, which is the hipster capitol of North America, has fixie bikes all over!
Fortuantely, the free bike rental collective here has prevented Bixi here

My university has at least 12 bike racks...and no parking lot. And is filled with hipsters. Actually, the whole city of Toronto seems to be filled with hipsters and idiot bikers.

I dream of running those hipsters over with my Jetta, and ruining their tight clothing with black exhaust.
