They are usually not too amazingly sturdy in construction compared to your average bridge, but they're usually only meant to ferry walking people rather than things such as vehicles and the like. Catwalks can become extremely dangerous if they are decayed or their foundations become loose, which often happens with age, plunging you to an undesired fate if you happen to put too much weight on one. Also, since most catwalks are made almost entirely of metal, sharp, possibly rusty bits may stick out and can pose a whole other kind of danger. As a general rule of thumb, explorers should take the necessary time to ensure that catwalks are secure enough to cross and even then, to do so with care.
