If I stopped at every locked gate, barbed wire fence, or no trespassing sign I'd have barely any photos.

I only take things if I can tell the place has been abandoned for years and the item wouldn't be missed by anybody. I took home a 1935 typewriter from a cabin in the woods once; the most recent sign of habitation was 1980-something, and it didn't look like anybody had been around since then. the typewriter's a little water-damaged, but I'm hoping to fix it up. The cabin was on crown land too, so I figured finders keepers. In my years of exploring, I've probably only taken maybe two or three things total... the other being a little carved bear and some film negatives which I developed then returned to the place I found them.

No more inviting people who are hardly interested, for me... I'm tired of leaving early because somebody else is bored or hungry or whatever.

Also, I'm not letting new people drive again. "Keep going. Just merge back out of the turn lane. As far as the cop knows, you just got in it too early. Seriously. What the hell are you doing. You realize that we're trespassing now, right in front of a cop. Okay, just turn around. You're only pulling in to turn around. No, don't- what the hell are you doing? You could have turned around right at the entrance. You realize we're getting pulled over, right? There's no chance he's just going to let us go after that." And so on.

I loaded my largest backpack with a tripod, a large camera, water bottle, extra layers, iPad, etc., proceeded to the foot of a radar tower that's always fascinated me, and looked up at the tall hurricane fence topped with barbed wire. And realized that if I'm going to attempt ninja stuff (a dubious enterprise with this body) I've got to pack light!

If you are driving a car, keep the stuff in the trunk and head in 'light'. The extra gear is close by if you need it but not lugging you down as you explore.

Sometimes when mine exploring we stage our heavy gear a ways inside the mine, like at a big intersection, while we push forward with minimal gear. If we find a shaft or other feature that requires ropes and rigging gear, then one of us heads back and hauls it forward.

Just my .02 worth.

I definitely fall into the camp of people here who would never do or take drugs on an exploration. No need to compound criminality if it can be helped. Plus I tend to be a less reliable photographer when not entirely sober.

I also would not climb up a bridge (if I'm going to plummet to my death I would prefer it to not be over water), would not explore a transit tunnel with a live third rail, stay in an abandoned building after the sun sets, break any windows to gain entry, or ruin anything intentionally.
Also I have this weird thing where I can't bring myself to go inside abandoned shopping malls. Something about them just screams "you will be assaulted" at every corner, and the devastating lack of natural light feels too unnaturally creepy in there.

I'll admit I've taken a few souvenirs now and then but I felt okay about it because the buildings were all slated to be demolished a few months later. I felt like at least I would be giving the items a permanent, appreciative home.

While my lack of exploration has kept me from facing many situations that I can say I would rather avoid, there are some that I can write off right now.

-ANYTHING involving deep water(5'+). Old boats, flooded basements, etc.
I'm a shit swimmer, already blacked out underwater once, and while its not as bad as you'd think (oddly peaceful right at the end), its definitely not something I'm trying to repeat.

- Active subway tunnels
I cant guarantee that this isnt something that I would maybe consider in the future, Its not something I'm trying to do any time soon. Just dont have the stones for that one yet. Once I'm more experienced that could change.

-Heights/climbing
Afraid of heights. Working on this fear, went on my first real roller coaster last summer, ended up hitting 6 that day. Now I love them. But thats safe. If we approach a location and its a "easy" climb up those rusty ass stairs to the 3rd floor to get inside, generally, you can go fuck yourself. Again, maybe later, but right now? hell no.

Thats what I've got off the top of my head, I'm sure theres a couple I'm missing. As I said, with experience comes boldness, so who knows where I'll be in a few years.

The basics...
Will not
- B&E. There was that 1 time... and never again.
- Leave trash & clutter, minus a glowstick or two in some tunnels.
- Overpack. My god... it's hot enough out there. No need for a s### ton of equipment.
- Invite 10 people. Even if the turn out is only 1-2. That's 7 other people who know where I'm going.
- Carry a concealed weapon. Pen knife sure. But anything more is asking for trouble.
- demolish. No. Can't stand being the umpteenth person to visit a site to only see the shell of a building left; with every possible thing broken out/inside.
- Bring more than 1 new guy at a time. Just no. Epic Clusterf### imminent. (Everyone might want to jot this one down.)

From what I've learned so far as a new explorer, here are the things I absolutely will not do under any circumstances:

-Explore without a full-size folding knife or small fixed blade (so that I can cut rope, tape, etc. without removing my gloves), multi tool or flashlight
-Carry weapons
-Create my own POE by any means
-Explore without first aid
-Intentionally damage anything while exploring
-Leave fingerprints anywhere if I can help it
-Leave any evidence of my presence if I can help it
-Explore too loudly
-Explore alone at night

Force someone else to explore when they're scared.

It's about exploring cool places, and there's nothing cool about teasing people because their gut tells them something is wrong.

Nothing wrong with a little fear. It's always with me when I climb or go into a hot site. Fear is normal and a healthy emotion. It's when fear overwhelms you that it becomes a problem. Having no fear is as dangerous as not being able to control it.

My fear is based more on the knowledge of the agonizing pain and possible disability that will follow a fuck up, then a fear of death. That and long draw out legal proceedings...

I will not enter an area if it is
a) Not structurally sound
b) Heavily guarded
c) I need to break the door to enter
d) able to make me sick in any way
e) known for having squatters

I also try my hardest to make sure I have an excuse to get myself out of trouble just incase (for example theres this one water park i go to that does have a locked gate, but the sides of the gate are pre-broken down and theres enough room for me to easily enter making it fair game to let curiosity take over. If they don't want people in there they should fix the gate, etc).

Another important thing is that I will NOT explore alone, ever. I climb too many things for being alone to be safe!

When you climb, falling is not an option. No one can save you if you don't save yourself. You fall, you die... stop a climb if it seems like it's a bad idea.
There are many times you shouldn't climb, wet surfaces or when the possibility of corroded anchor bolts exists such as old steel anchored into concrete. These can be nearly impossible to visually spot and seem sound until -snap-
Even a 5 foot fall can kill or maim. Any fall on steel expect to break bones, steel is unforgiving of mistakes. 3 points of contact always. Know your limitations.

All very good points! Its just important to always have a spotter with you regardless of kind of climbing! (I personally was just talking about basic climbing on roofs but what you bring up there is suuupppeerrr important for any climbing over 3 stories, at that point too you should always make sure to have proper equipment on you haha)
