Amid the frenzy and outrage over Hilary Rosen‘s comments about Ann Romney, the Catholic League tweeted a response saying, “Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own.”

Wow.

some other shocking bullshit associated with forementioned tweet...

No one is arguing that raising children isn’t work. Democratic strategist and CAP Action board member Hilary Rosen is a single mother of twins who had to go through the expensive and challenging process of adoption with her then partner Elizabeth Birch. Now, she’s trying to stick up for other mothers who don’t have the luxury of millionaire husbands to help fund their child-rearing duties, and the backlash is getting ugly. Catholic League president Bill Donohue attacked her family on Twitter this morning:

@CatholicLeague: Lesbian Dem Hilary Rosen tells Ann Romney she never worked a day in her life. Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own.

Somehow, Rosen’s family is less valid, less worthy of respect because she adopted her children. This insults not just lesbian couples, but all non-birth mothers. In fact, it seems like few even recognize that Rosen is a mother at all, perhaps an inherent cultural consequence of her choice (or lack of choice) to not be a stay-at-home mom.

Being raised Catholic this disappoints me. Sure, I left the church but I still respect it as a charitable organization. If the person responsible for that kind of language isn't let go of those responsibilities, I will no longer respect the church. Very disheartening the level of vitriol in those words.

Sigh. Since I haven't seen anyone point this out anywhere yet, I just have to comment that the point of Rosen's statement was that being a mother is hard work.

I only got the sound-bite, not the fully contextualized version. On top of that, I heard the sound-bite as part of the right-wing meltdown over Rosen's comments. I guess I should seek out the entire conversation. And I should talk about myself some more.

Not surprisingly, the whole quote is not exactly easy to find among the noise of people pulling out the single line, but you don't need a whole lot of context: Just the next sentence.

'Guess what: his wife has never really worked a day in her life. She's never really dealt with the kind of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing in terms of how do we feed our kids, how do we send them to school, and why do we worry about their future.'

Ann's latest response:

I love the fact that there are women out there who don’t have a choice and they must go to work and they still have to raise the kids. Thank goodness that we value those people too. And sometimes life isn’t easy for any of us.

And Mitt's opinion:

Hardworking parents raise hardworking kids; we should recognize that the opposite is also true. The influence of the work habits of our parents and other adults around us as we grow up has lasting impact.

My parents worked hard. Very hard. I can't keep a job due to mental illness. Does that make the little work I get by doing odd jobs any less valid?

One of my friends is infertile due to chemicals she was studying in grad school. She and her husband have adopted 3 children. She's a professor at a college, he's a personal trainer. They have arranged their schedules so that there is either someone home with their children, or they're at school. They work very hard, and put out a ton of money in order to adopt those children. All 3 children came from the same group of people. Rich, conservative, white girls. The 3rd child they adopted was almost a complete surprise. The birth mother didn't even look at the child. Even given those circumstances, is the birth mother's relationship with that child more valid than that of the adoptive parents?

If someone goes all libel/slander on me on the interwebs, you can bet there be a lawsuit a brewin'.
