I'd say ease of assembly and production line speed- pick up any lock cylinder from the pile and jam it in a steering column. Then someone at the end of the line records the key tag numbers for future reference, and bam, you have a car.

Ford did the same.

Simple; to make sure the key given to the valet only ran the engine, and could not open the glove compartment to steal your gun, the trunk to steal your ammo, or lock the car with the keys inside... Neko.

my older Cavaliers had them, the 96, 98, and 98 didn't. The 98 Lumina and 99 Monte Carlo did, but the 96 Beretta doesn't. Neither the 05 of 07 Cobalts had them either.

Get a VW.

I was going to say... my Golf has one. I didn't realize that other car makers were that dumb not to include a lock. I should have known better not to assume as much.

My Beetle and my Jeep both have them, but they're so flimsy you could pop them open with a screwdriver.

The Beetle's handle will break off eventually anyhow.

Bought my first car in '74 when I was 16. A '71 Toyota Corolla Coupe narrowly won out over a '68 Beetle. A Fiat 850 convertible was also in the running, too much rust. Have seen maybe one since then.

The Toyota had a double sided key that fit the ignition and the trunk. How much more complicated does this need to be?

I mostly switched to Domestic years ago, but wonder why the new '88 K Car has the key go in upside down. As did my old Cordoba, with cloth seats Sorry Ricardo...

You may be right Kuro, but no matter how rich I ever might get, no valet is getting the key(s) to my Countach. If they can drive the car, the rest is gravy.

My '80 Cheyenne has a -looks like a lock but lol on you- impenetrable slit in the glove box door.

Remember the Ford Aerostar Vans and Pickups that had the decal on the front hubs with a red line that looked like locking hubs from 8 miles away. The games car companies play are kind of amusing at times...
