...as a project car?

a friend of mine lives in Tennessee and has a 1982 Ford Mustang GT for sale for $2000. It has 99k on the odometer, still has the 2bbl 302 under the hood and is rock solid, no rust. It does need some interior trim pieces (dashpad, rear hatch liners), but its in one piece, even the cruise control and A/C work!

Should I get it? I WANT it because I miss my 84 Capri RS 5.0L and the 82 had that 'look' that I think was lost as the car evolved through the years. I ran the numbers and I can afford another loan... i mean this car is pretty rare now.

Sure if you've got the cash. Rare cars in good shape should should always be owned by people who know how to take care of them, and you definitely fit the bill for that. :0

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

Go for it.

What's wrong with it that you consider it a project car?

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

the paint is a little faded/cooked from being in Tennessee. Those cars only had the 7.5" rear end and were somewhat fragile. The engine was only a 157hp 2bbl 302 with what was called an SROD (single rail overdrive) 4-speed manual. The shocks and struts are done in it so it has a bit of a spongy ride. I'm calling around trying to figure out how to get it home... my friend swears that it will make the 17-hour trip back here, but I am leery... 29 year old car + 17 hour road trip + interstate speeds = possible recipe for disaster.

Ideas?

I like it. If the car gets driven regularly, I wouldn't worry about the road trip. If it's been sitting since christ was a cowboy... trailer it. I drove a '69 Beetle over 1000 km last week on some very hilly highways and she's running better than ever now.

I like the XR4ti in the background, too.

BTW- How long has it been parked on its side?

Ray is kinda of a mechanical madman... he's the guy that built the LS1-equipped 86 Mustang SVO i told you about. He bought this 82 GT to do another LS swap but couldn't bring himself to molest an all-original 82 GT. So he bought a Corvette. The Merkur is kind of near and dear to both our hearts. I had one, he's had three.

He drives it to work and into town so it is driven... I'm really leaning for this car. I figure I can take a couple of days to get it home. I don't have to do all 17 hours in one sitting, although I am like that.

For what it's worth from me I'd do it, I've had lots of fun in those. Starting to be hard to get up here, sad really.

Fly down, drive back. I took a 69 Jeepster Commando on a 1000 mile journey on bias ply tires and left the roof at home. Drive it. Pussy
