Entry: Moon Village
originally posted by Steed

A moon village (달동네) is a particular type of neighbourhood found largely in Seoul and Busan, South Korea. The name comes from the neighbourhood's closer proximity to, or better view of, the Moon.

During the rebuilding of South Korea following the war, the richer people managed to stake a claim to all the best land, and the impoverished people had to build squatter villages high up in the hills, which were heavily inconvenient at the time. Now that infrastructure has made a quick car ride up much easier, the rich are claiming the higher land and developing highrises up there, or just removing the hill entirely and building on flat land.

The few remaining moon villages are dying fast as their aging residents are once again forced out, most likely moving into the countryside where conditions are even worse. Moon villages are remarkable for the way they are built into the landscape, with decades of patchwork repairs intended to hold things together for a short while longer. They are prominent and easy to find thanks to their high elevation and proximity to hiking paths.

A typical (mostly abandoned) moon village.
