Gripes.
entry by Avatar-X

[gripe]

In case you didn't know it yet, I run this website. I do it in my own time, and mostly out of my own pocket. That's fine, I'm not complaining.

However, it bothers me when people have a problem with the site, so they take it out on me personally. "Av, " they say, "Why did you ban me? I know that I broke pretty much every rule in the book, and that you warned me twice already, but why did you ban me? It must be because you hate me! I hate you now Av!"

Or let's not forget "Av, why does your site quiz people when they want to register? You're forcing your personal ethics on everyone! I know that the four ethics questions in the quiz are clearly labelled as being optional, but you're still forcing your ethics on people! This means I will now hate you!"

It really sucks, because it turns me into the bad guy. Being the bad guy really sucks. If you've never been the bad guy, maybe you won't understand, but it hurts to be treated this way. Site admins have feelings too...

I think the quiz was a great idea - more things on the internet (and perhaps in life) should require people to pass a test. It made me feel as though the site was made up of (mostly) honest and respectable people. If people can't handle the quiz then they are most likely not going to have much insight anyway...great website in every way

I apologize for being a mega-dick and all. I was going through the ICQ log for your contact trying to find a date to prove a point on the UEA board about when UER was started - and got reading it.

I really did act like an asshole, and everything really was unwarranted. It's really strange when you step back and look at something and realize the exact reason that you had for doing what you did - and it not meshing with what you remember those reasons being.

This prompted a long entry in the UEA secure board, as well as a livejournal post. Mostly to inform the UEA crowd that all my ranting was just me being a dick.

I still don't know if I'll post often on here - but I'll at least add it to my bookmarks of sites to check on a regular basis.

I'm not asking for you to forgive me - I really was a nasty person, hell, for the last year. I was just jealous and didn't want to admit it. I couldn't hack all the abuse you take as admin for UER.

interesting. I dont remember being asked 4 ethics questions when i signed up. perhaps I was and my memory is fuzzy now. I personally do not mind being the bad guy, I wouldnt mind replying to or dealing with that side of things, I do it professionally as a Mediator , so if one day I get lucky enough to gain your trust and you agree it wouldnt be a bad idea from you side to delegate some of the strong arm stuff Id be glad to help. In an intellectual approach of course seeking not to inflame anything but just correct and redirect. Perhaps this could include emails on why someone gets banned. I guess that wouldnt be a moderator maybe there could be a special role .... one eyed jack black? he he he....and a logo of a pirate? Keep up the great work Av. I come on here almost every day. Also something to consider would be an indication of just what kind of ball park it takes to get in the top 5 for donations. that might help people get more motivated. although perhaps things work well as they stand . you seem to be reaching the target every month.

I see this thread has been collecting some dust so I think I'll blow it off and say thank you for creating this site and giving us a safe place to network and comingle with each other though we be states and countries apart. I feel where you are coming from about not wanting to be the bad guy and it sucks but unfortunately its gotta be done sometimes. Your doing a great job AV, my hat off to you.

Sincerely,

Second.

I have no idea why some of the people on this site feel the need to bring their immaturity with them, but I think you deserve to be treated with respect.

You've done so much for urban exploration, all from your own pocket and your free time.

I want to thank you for creating this site. Because of it, I have seen many amazing things, had tons of wonderful experiences, and have been able to meet some wonderful people along the way.

We all know running a website such as this one, especially one so amazing as this one does take alot of time and effort on someones part. In this case the someones part is Av...which because of the time, money and effort on his behalf has made this site so great. I for one must applaud Av for being able to make this site happen because without it, it wouldn't be one of my favorite websites to this day. You've done something special for every UE on this site and for that sir i cannot thank you enough.
