So I recently traded my TSX for a new truck since my commute shortened significantly. I'd still like to keep a commuter car around though...

Requirements- manual trans, 25 mpg, semi reliable, can only cost around $1500, and be pretty fun to drive.

My thoughts are a Honda CRX (tough to find one that hasn't been fucked with), an E30, a Miata, or (my personal favorite) a first generation Saab 900 Turbo.

What other options are there?

Could get into a fairly nice E34 for that money too. Miss the hell out of mine.

Decided I'm going to rock a Saab... there are quite a few around in the $1000 range! Found a pretty clean convertible for $900... not sure about the convertible though.

How about a prius that the batteries have blown up in I'm sure you could pick one of those up from some egotistic moron for a few bucks.

From what I understand, Prius packs aren't failing as fast as anticipated, and they can be rebuilt fairly easily.

My vote will always be partial to the Saab. Clearly. lol
HOWEVER, $900 for a convertible scares me.

no.
they're smug, hypermiling, tree hugging, wannabe greepeace assholes that need to be first, run off the road. second, handcuffed to one of their beloved trees and third, driven into repeatedly by a big, fat, thirsty CHEVY SUBURBAN!

I had a 2005 Chevy Cobalt base coupe that was turning in 44mpg on the highway.
you want an efficient, green, ultra-mileage car, you buy a goddamn Volkswagen TDI.

I want to get a Prius really badly. Then gut it entirely and put some massive, loud, smokey, offensive V8.

Or do a TDI swap so it actually gets good mileage.

I would actually leave in the hybrid powertrain, BUT put in a Cummins forklift diesel engine.

Actually, hypermiling a hybrid uses the batteries more than driving it normally. If you're not using that energy storage, you're not doing it right.

Found a pretty clean NA 900 for a mere $750 a couple hours away- just a couple pretty small spots of rust.

I had my heart set on a turbo, but maybe for MPG's it would be better to have the NA one.

The issue with that (I was curious as to why VW isn't making the new Jetta a diesel hybrid) is because diesels are meant to stay running, where the engine in a hybrid is being turned off and restarted every few minutes in city traffic.

The reason for the Jetta hybrid is neat too- it's for people who want the mileage of a TDI, but live in the city and don't want to sacrifice having a fun car. TDIs don't get great mileage in cities, and the new hybrid car is turbocharged, had massive sway bars, bigger brakes from the GLI, GLI suspension and a GLI interior.

So it's about as badass as a hybrid can be. Still not my cup of tea, but hey, at least it has a big "TURBO HYBRID" graphic on the side

Yeah, the prius doesn't have that.
