| | | Posted by bandi I should make it clear too, that I absolutely love my job and love what I do, but it's definitely hard, tiring work. And also, I still think my favorite pastime after work is doing restoration stuff on aircooled VWs. That calms me down and relaxes me. Ironically, I replaced that bad door latch in my car tonight...
| after 16 years as a mechanic, 9 as a GM mechanic, my brother called it quits and works at the same mill i do. I went to school to be a mechanic and it was fun pooping around, but to do it as a job, here in the northeast... no fucking way. my brother's truck is exactly what you're talking about. he's a hell of a mechanic (seriously) and his 96 Chevy 1500 is just falling apart. He's just too wiped out when he got home to screw with it. He was either helping me with my shit, or my dad with his stuff, or overtime at the garage just helping out.

| | | Posted by shadowedsmile Sounds like I was right when I bailed on my decision to become a mechanic right out of high school. I was a detailer for about two years and part time for a year after... and I still hate the thought of cleaning vehicles... I still work in the automotive industry and want to set fire to people daily, and that's before we look at the fact that I'm female. You wouldn't believe the things your boobs prevent you from knowing...including how to install rain guards. I had someone wait 30 minutes for a man to tell him how to remove the plastic backing to apply his rain guards because the girl that did it for 2 years couldn't know. Almost every Volkswagen question is sent my way and followed by questions and hesitant glares. Bandi can attest to my general knowledge of vehicles, but I regularly get shat upon because I have tits. The majority of guys at my work ask me for help and ask my opinion. I can't wait for the day where I buy a vehicle from someone I don't know. I was a 16 year old art student when I bought my first car and knew how to throw down and question then... Here I am eight years later...
| i am almost 40 years old. I was raised around cars. My dad worked in a paper mill (ironically the same one work at and my brother works at... there's a Springsteen song in there somewhere), but was always into cars. As a result, to make extra money on the side, he was always rebuilding an engine for so and so, repainting a car for such and such... so my brother and I were just car people. I got my first car when I was 15 and dinked around with a bit, not realizing how much upkeep there was until I started driving. After dropping out of college to "find myself" (i'm still looking by the way), I went to tech school to be an auto mechanic and found that I hated it. I hated the thought of doing that for a job. So that was a quasi-wasted 13 months... Anyways, one thing I am good at is detailing a car even though as of late, I don't really give two shits anymore. I am pretty good at diagnosing and finding the right parts but suck at changing parts. I have no patience.
