After Star Tours and a ton of other deals, Disney finally broke down and flat out made a deal with George Lucas to buy Lucasfilm.

4.05 Billion dollars.

Disney plans on releasing the next Star Wars movie in 2015. Episode 7. Also they plan to make two after that. Episode 8 and 9.

I'm not really sure what to make of it yet.

It brings to mind my childhood, seeing Star Wars 17 times in the theater, and being so happy with it.

And then, hearing that there was a sequel coming out, and being ecstatic that the joy could continue.

And then hearing about the 9 film arc that seemed like the greatest thing that could ever happen to mankind.

And then, realizing not so many yeas later, that the Star Wars movies were actually absolute shit.

"George Lucas was the sole owner of LucasFilm"

Dude... that is amazingly fucking rich.

I am kind of interested to see the story keep going. Maybe with Lucas out of the picture, they won't suck.

Maybe no more bullshit like Jar Jar?

This is the one thing that gives me hope.

Bob Iger actualIy listens to the fans. He has done what Eisner didn't for Disney.

Yeah. The original trilogy was good because Old Man Lucas had different people directing them and his (now ex) wife re-wrote his original godawful B-movie-grade scripts. The prequels were all produced/eritten/directed by Lucas exclusively and they ranged from flawed but passable (Episode III) to crime against science fiction (Episode I). With him retiring and putting someone else at the helm, the SW franchise has the chance to regain it's former glory.

The only thing that could save Star Wars movies would be to do them as radio shows.

Star Wars was never science fiction... it was more space opera than anything else.

no semantics.

science fiction is just that- speculative fiction with its basis grounded somewhat in the realm of science reality. I.E- BladeRunner was science fiction. I,Robot was science fiction (with a fable-like allegory to it)

Space opera was Star Wars, Firefly/Serenity.

the gray are is the Star Trek franchise which is both science fiction and operatic.

i don't see your issue.

I would think space opera was more dependent on the story, rather than how the future is presented.

(Hugs her Jedi Duffy the Teddy Bear and campaigns for Kevin Smith to direct.)

He wants the job. Badly.

Any thoughts?

After watching Red State, i think he would do a great job. I also think they should get directors that are more indie minded, like Tarsem Singh (the cell, the fall) or Tom Twyker(run Lola run, perfume, cloud atlas) or Jean Pierre Juenet (Amelie, city of lost children). I think those kinds of directors could really bring something special to it.
