Here is a video of my best rappel out of 3: https://www.youtub...t1b84&feature=plcp

I might also upload my climbing video, but I have to edit it some so it isn't so long.

same here! looks wicked!
How long was that drop?? Do they charge $$$ to do it? When? Where?

There were a few moments where it looked like you were starting to pick up speed and I started to panic lol. Good thing you were using a rack - on short drops of just 70-80~ ft I've had my STOP loose enough friction to scare the piss outta me (figuratively).

Nice Rappel on a beautiful drop. What is the height on that? It looks to be in the 250' range though it's difficult to tell with the wide angle video. I personally love to fly down the rope, but it's not good for the rope or equipment so I try to take it a bit more slowly than I would like.

Thanks for sharing!

Almost all of the folks I explore with use a Stop. The running joke is that they are really a "Slow". My original rope was a PMI Pit Rope that is quite stiff and works well with a Stop. Now I have two new ropes from New England Rope that are nice and supple....and a nightmare for the Stop users. They work wonderfully with my 4 bar rack.

Are you using the optional braking biner to help control your descent? If not, you should check the internet for the correct way to rig the braking biner for additional friction.

you're absolutely right - the STOP is only a problem with the New England KMIII rope. One of my good friends owns several 300ft lengths of KMIII, and it's scared me real bad a few times. My Bluewater Assault Line works perfectly with the STOP on anything less than say 100ft, but much higher and it becomes difficult to control, at least for a 6'1 210lb guy like me. Smaller people might very well find it SLOW, but I've never once had that problem.

Never actually tried using an offset braking carabiner with it either. I usually just switch to an ATC with the KMIII, which seems to work a lot better.

And the rappel in the video is anywhere from 750-850ft, depending where along the bridge they were rigged.

Crap, I was WAY off on my height estimate! Who has a spool of rope that long? Most of the suppliers I know of ship in 600' lengths. That's a super cool drop! It would be a way bad ascent though.

They sell longer sections for industrial and professional applications.

The last six on this page all come in 1200' lengths.

you can also buy 11 and 12.5mm Petzl Vector rope in pre-cut lengths up to 366M (~1200ft)
Must be heavy, and expensive, and all sorts of good

Yeah, I'm thinking that I wouldn't volunteer to carry that rope! A 1200 foot length has to weigh a bit. Even dragging my 300' rope though a mine starts to get heavy after a while.

I agree, 300' gets heavy, especially if it gets wet. With a longer rope though you could have a coil of 400', and then a 15' connector, and then another coil, and split up the load that way.

Yes, it was an 800 ft rappel. I am preparing to head down to Mexico in a few weeks to hit the 1200 ft pits again ;). I am not using a breaking biner, and no one I know uses them. Some people do use French wraps, though.

I think it would be very difficult to form a UER Team and probably impossible by next year unless someone does a lot of foot work. It now costs $150 for a Bridge pass (it used to be free). This was my first time even seeing the bridge, and let me say that it was absolutely worth it.

The reason I say it would be difficult to form a team is that those team leaders have been doing it for years. All of the people seem to know each other. All of the spots for teams seem to be full. There's a "lottery" but some teams seem guaranteed spots. There is a team fee of at least $500.

That being said, anyone and everyone is welcome to join my team. All you need to do is practice with us a few times. There are a few prerequisite rappels first before you go to Bridge Day. Those are 300 and 600 ft. Then you do some weighted rappels to simulate what 800 ft of rope feels like. Our required practices will be in the summer in Alabama, North Carolina, and Maryland. Some but not all of the practices are mandatory.

For those mentioning the Petzl Stop / ASAP, I don't think it could ever work on a rope this long due to the tension. A rack is a lot more fun anyways. A Stop / bobbin is safe and a nice device.

lol yea, I'd be terrified to rappel 800` on a STOP. Anything over 100' and it becomes seriously difficult to control friction.....agreed that a rack's the way to go on something this long.
The UER team was just an idea...might not be reasonable in the timeframe (and bidget) allotted. I'd love to join your team but just dont know if I could make it all over the US for practices, although it could be a good excuse to travel
