well yesterday i had to drag my cousins poor abused 2002 Kia Rio to the scrapyard, a hateful abortion of a car (i had done the rear brakes a week before the cars demise and well taking the wheel bearing apart to remove the drum seemed silly to me!)

Anyways, we rented a car dolly from U-Haul and dragged it there, my ranger isnt the greatest on gas when empty (i have a scanguage II to check fuel econ) anyways while hauling this car down the highway at 100km/h i was averaging 12l/100km. empty im doing 9-10l/100km! I was really surprised anyways had to tell you guys!

bic Lighter car, use it, when it stops working... throw it away. That pretty much goes for any car made in Korea... ever. Last week we had a girls kia in the shop. I think it was a spectra, but it was a 2006 and EVERY bolt broke doing the front brakes. Even after heating with a torch, caliper bolts, mounting bolts, all of them. The quality of steel they use is just shit, like i work on 60 year old + cars all the time and never have bolts break off like that.

So, you're saying that they use the almost locally sourced steel made from old ships, right?

mostly neglect, i think he last changed the oil in 2005, but what did it in his rad burst and he kept driving, i could have put a new rad in it(it seemed to still run ok) but i didnt know what damage he did driving with no water in it. The rear brakes when i replaced them were original, the self adjusters were so rusted i had to beat them with a hammer to free them up. Junkyard gave him 250$ which was more than i got for my grand prix last year.

Ive had older hyundais come in for repairs and shit just ends up breaking and being so rotten the client ends up scrapping it

Another question about the Korean cars, do the ones built in the US seem to be made better, or is it all of them. I mean, I know people that have 100,000 miles on their 3 year old Sonatas and Elantras, but they do all of their own work, and they do it before it's needed. To me, it seems like they might be okay cars if they are taken care of.

They'll run forever unless some bonehead doesn't maintain the thing. That's what I'm getting at. Several of the import guys I know drive imports because they can get away with more deferred maintenance with fewer issues. Thus far, I've owned 2 GM products, and both have needed a lot of little things that any of my Hondas haven't needed.

I see far more domestic cars die from neglect than imports in my area, anyway.

Mine is almost 7 year old and I have just minor work to get done..timing belt,brakes.That's it.Never had any problem with my elantra on the road whatsoever.I plan to keep it another 2 years or so and then buy a brand new sonata or santa fe

See, I don't think there's any modern car, outside of high-end luxury cars, that will have any major break downs in the first 100,000 miles or so. By that time, most people have already traded it off, and the car is likely on its third owner. Perhaps, cars are more reliable than they have ever been, now that most things just work for a long time.

I have to agree, EFI and OBDII have made it pretty rare to be left on the side of the road due to a no start, at least for me, ive been left high and dry twice, both times because of a fuel pump. but no starts due to other stuff, no. I remember as a kid with carbuerators and points, they may have been simple but its not normal for a 10 year old kid to know his dads mechanic by name and get a Christmas present from him!! (and no he wasnt family)

High end cars are the worst! Mostly neglect from the owners. I'm assuming since they buy an expensive car it does not need maintenance. Mercedes owners are the worst, If I had a dollar for every asshole who called me for the "cheapest tires you have" for there Mercedes.
