I'm really surprised no one has posted anything about this yet. We saw it Christmas night. I had just finished re-reading the book, and I felt a lot of the scenes were unnecessary padding to link it to the LotR mythology, but otherwise it was awesome.

It definitely felt padded to me too.

Which format did you watch? I went for the 2D, 24fps version.

2D, not sure of the frame rate. I wonder... I read it was shot on the Red camera, which shoots digital video. Video typically shoots at 30 frames per second, not 24. (technically, 29.8 or something like that.) So does that mean the Red, unlike every other video camera, shoots at 24 normally? I have a friend who's a cinematographer. I should ask him.

Another question: were they projecting it at 24 or 48? I guess it doesn't make sense to shoot it at 48 if it was only going to be projected at 24, because half the frames would need to be removed.

Just thinking out loud.

Weren't they supposed to shoot that at like 60 FPS and show it at that or something?

Shot at 48fps 3D, and projected at 48/3D, IMAX 3D and 24/2D (might also be a 24/3D?) depending on the theatre's capability.

From almost all accounts, the 48fps seem to be a pretty big failure.

Absolutely. I'm OK with not showing Smaug, because it builds anticipation, but the only reason to stretch it into three movies was to make money. Peter Jackson said it was for artistic reasons. I say BS.

Listening to the entire unabridged audiobook will take you about the same amount of time as it will take to watch the 3 movies.
