My roommate came across this site: http://club.mp3search.ru/ and was raving about how it offers cheap MP3s with fast downloads. I immediately thought it must be illegal and/or incredibly shady, but I checked it out and it looked surprisingly legit. I actually broke down and tried it (knowing that roomie had already purchased some songs there and had it work out) and I was surprised to see that it worked just fine.

My question is, is this possibly legal? I mean, it's a Russian site (supposedly) but that doesn't necessarily make it completely outside the law, right? Or does it just mean that people are less likely to be able to crack down on it because it's outside of US law?

All I know is that I have been downloading from it like crazy and it seems pretty legit. Still, I made sure to use PayPal and not a credit card, as I'd prefer not to have that number floating around where the Russian mafia can see it... :-p

True, but Cuban cigars are legal in Canada and yet you can't bring them across the border into the US. (It's not exactly the same thing, of course, but you see what I mean.)

I guess I am just worried that I'll get busted for having the things on my computer. Then again, I actually paid for them (if only a tiny bit) so maybe the RIAA would rather chase KaZaA users than me.

MatC don't be so paranoic. Run Ad-Aware 2 times a week. Virus Scan twice a week. Check latest updatets and patches for antivirus and Windows. Run firewall. Don't share files directly. Share them only trouth search engine. Keep your computer clean. check netstat -a for strange ports open on your computer. Disable unused services. Reset your IP adress one in the while. And you should be fine.)))
