I don't know about that but years ago I was with a girl friend who was doing academic research at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. While she was back in the stacks I was checking out some of the concept sketches that hung on the wall in the front of the research library. I struck up a conversation with one of the librarians and it somehow turned what are radical departure Bill Mitchell's designs were from his mentor Harley Earl.
The library and asked if I would be interested in seeing more work which of course I was. I was presented with 3 blueprint sized binders and told to enjoy.
Copies naturally, but I could see the progression of General Motors cars including concept versions of some of the most famous vehicles design during Bill Mitchell's tenure at GM.
I remember very clearly while examining one of the fantastic colored pencil sketches I touched it briefly and that's when I noticed a tiny bit of it rubbed off on my finger. These were no reproductions. I had the actual sketch pad of one of the most influential designers in the history of the automobile. And not just his, the two notebooks blow were simply labeled with a set of numbers and the words "Earl" and " Iacocca".
And that was just the beginning even more binders begin to appear. I really don't know how much time passed, by the time she was done with the research she had come to do I was completely lost in the imaginations of some of the greatest designers who have ever lived. Staring in awe at where it all began.
So that's my story, no models but a glimpse into automotive history I know I'll never forget.
