I needed to desperately take a dump so I ran into the local abandoned council depot.

After I finished reading the newspaper, I folded it half and sat there enjoying the view thinking to myself, "this is lovely".

I got in to UE from a house that me and some friends thought was spooky. So we went in one night with some flashlights and looked around to see that everything was left inside. There was a tv, piano, couch, etc. So after seeing all that, I thought it was a pretty cool thing to go find more locations to check out. So I found out about urban exploring while google searching locations.

My first exploration was when I was in 5th grade (so...10-11) and one of my friends was having this huge sleep over. She lived out in the country and were just wandering around the property (and there was a lot of it, including snowmobile trails) and we came across and old house just beyond the property.

We all went in but couldn't go far because the floor didn't look stable (it looked like a fire got at the house) and there was a mattress spring that looked like it was burned out and a painting of an American looking flag (it wasn't the current one, I wish I could go back and get pictures)

It was an abandoned house on the edge of my grandparents' field. Literally on the edge - they owned only half of the building. My grandma used to dry onions on the floor of the big kitchen and sometimes took me there. Later, I got a permission to explore the rest of the building on my own and even climb to the attic which was full of old stuff, 60s newspapers etc.

I was seven years old back then. I guess that's how it began.

The first place I ever got the chance to explore was an old hotel in the western pa area (You could probably guess which one, its demolished now) A friend and her cousin showed me the area, and we explored briefly. They found it initially through a geocache that has long since been gone, and the houses along the street were also mostly abandoned. The place got me to really enjoy urbex. The same day we explored an abandoned water treatment facility near a large lake in the area, also found via geocaching (this one is still there, though the location is no longer listed on the geocaching website). Since then, I've been visiting places more close to home, and those that I've discovered while on vacations.

For me, my first exploration was the abandoned mental institute behind the movie theater where I used to work in high school. Usually on late night after work, another co-worker and I would go through the fence and explore the entire campus. We had to be careful though as there were usually police patrolling near by. The place had been abandoned for about five years and most of it had been trashed. There were some really eerie things about the place, especially the "hearing test room" which was a small room with a big steel door. These late night adventures are what got me into urban exploring and I hope to be able to find some more locations since the one I used to visit has been demolished.

Well I have 2 quick stories. I probably share this one location with a lot of explorers. Growing up in a boring town you are always looking for something to do. I was always up for an adventure. So my friends and I took a quick trip across the bridge into PA to visit a certain state hospital. ;) I was hooked from the beginning. We made multiple trips back throughout the years. So that is what started the exploring bug. I didn't really take pictures then though. It was more just a place to go.

The second is when I started exploring again. I had taken a long break and then got back into it. This time camera in hand. For all those who actually know me know what my favorite building is. I've been there more times than any other place. I have more pictures of this place than any other abandonment. I also got in it at a really good time. It was before it was deconstructed and gutted. Absolutely Beautiful! One of the things I love is the things left behind that tell a story. Well there were so many things it made it such a long story. I still tell it to this day. This building is the one that kick started this recent run of exploring and I haven't stopped since. ;) It's amazing how much just 1 building can inspire you to do things.

I guess you could say I started young, and started big. When I was fourteen I infiltrated a semi-local active shipyard. Got in, took pics, explored a little, and left. Then went back probably somewhere along the lines of ten times. Never got caught.

Since then I've broadened my range to anything abandoned, historic, or just interesting in general, abandoned or not.

I've been caught once in my explorations, and I held my camera in a visible place and just asked where I was, stating 'Dave' ran off after an urgent call, said he'd be right back, but never showed up again. Dave's a common enough name, right? The security guard just escorted me off the property and paged someone looking for a Dave while I hastily beat it.

I got started by exploring tunnels a few years before I ever did any buildings.

When I was fifteen, I moved from Akron to a suburb on the west side of Cleveland. I had come from an "theater" high school, so although I wasn't an actor or in the theater program, all my friends were, and we were all pretty weird people. When I moved to Cleveland though, I got put into a preppy suburb high school where all the kids were pretty much the same and very judgmental of anybody who was different. There was one girl though, who really stood out though. She didn't give a fuck about what anybody thought, dressed and acted weird, and I liked her a lot for that. I started talking to her on Facebook, and AIM, and we got along really well. She was dating a freshman at the time, and they were pretty close, but he was always kind of embarrassed by her acting differently, so I could tell that their relationship wasn't going to last long.

When they finally did break up the next summer, I asked her to come hang out with me for the day, so we walked to a park in our town, and went to this really secluded area deep in the woods where a lot of high school students liked to hang out. It was kind of down in a mini gorge, and there was a creek and a pond, and it was fed by a tunnel that went under the railroad tracks back there. We didn't have anything else to do, so the two of us spend the day following this creek and a series of tunnels that raged from about a hundred feet to several hundred yards. Eventually we got to a much larger tunnel and we followed it about a mile and a half in, lighting the way with a key chain light that she had. After a while, we got to a point that looked like it used to be an opening, but it was closed off, and the only way to go further would be a small tunnel that we would have to crawl through. It was really cool though because at the spot that there used to be an opening, there was a whole bunch of graffiti from the 1950s and 60s, stuff like "high school class of '57".

After that day, the two of us didn't really hang out again. We were both fifteen, and I guess that at the time, I was still a bit too immature or awkward for her taste, but I still kept in contact and explored tunnels with her brother, who was also our age. That day really got me interested in stuff like this though and I started to look around more for other people who were into exploring. Eventually, when I was seventeen, I met a group of people in their twenties, who hadn't ever tried Urban Exploring before, but they were super interested in it after I told them about it. It was with them that I first started exploring abandonments and other buildings, but that's an entirely different, even longer story. I still explore with them whenever I'm in Cleveland, home from University.

I have always liked to explore and walk around usually in the woods though sense i grew up a hunter and in a small Texas town. Recently a friend from high school asked me to join him in exploring an "abandoned" brewery we spent about 4 hours looking around and finely left after my flashlight started to die. after doing more research i found this site. Had the exploring bug sense i was a kid but now its just urbanized its self. I'm constantly looking for more to explore and bigger and more challenging abandonments.

In my hometown - which is Tampere, Finland - we have this abandoned match factory that everyone knows and probably also everyone has visited. The place is pretty famous for its graffiti: the factory used to hold illegal raves in the 90s and I guess that's when the graffiti thing started.

Anyway. My friend had just gotten herself a new camera when we decided to go try it out at the match factory. The factory is in pretty bad shape, things are hanging loose, tiles are coming off the walls, random cars and parts of cars and other crap is hanging around from the people who've used the factory for different purposes - many as a dump.

That time was a little hasty as we heard someone playing the violin and screaming at the same time in the main building. We decided not to approach them since the place is also pretty infamous for occasional junkies that nobody really wants to deal with. We decided to check out the other buildings in the surrounding areas but left pretty quickly as the people living in the area are not very fond or uers - they think we all come there to smash shit up and get drunk / high.

Why we decided to go check the factory out in the first place was because of an article I'd seen in the local newspaper about a farm house that had been abandoned some 40 years ago with everything still on their places. The place looked like the people had just gotten of the breakfast table and left - for good. That really interested me and I've been into urbex ever since.

Here are some photos from the factory if someone's interested: https://www.google...Q&biw=1021&bih=505

Hospital where my sister and I were born, abandoned in the late 90s. Stopped by one night to look around, found an unlocked door. It was late at night, and I only got to explore some of the lobby, cafeteria, and similar less-interesting areas. Was totally under-equipped in terms of lighting, but the building was in excellent condition structurally. Been back a few times since and explored more, but that one trip got me hooked.

I'm having trouble remembering just what the first urban explore would be, but I think what started it all was that in high school we found out about this defunct school a city over (because they had gone bankrupt and consolidated locations). And the local kids broke a window a few stories up and would go in and explore. One of my friends informed me and we explored all the way through it one day and it was really eerie. A school frozen in history (only a few years old but still crazy). Computers and desks still there, gym gear, etc. Of course we found out a year after that, that it still used a couple classrooms for an adult school but oh welllll.

I was on the way to the beach in the summer of 2012 in Korea and on the left was this abandoned apartment complex right in the middle of the fields. My friend who was driving decided to check the site out and then a week later, I went to explore the site and it was an amazing find.

My first unofficial explores:

Some time between 85-87 when I was in 2nd/3rd or 4th grade I lived in a trailer court on Highway 10 across from the Twin Cities Ammunition Plant. All the MSP folk should know where this is.
There is a short frontage road between the trailer court and the highway that had some shabby houses on it. The very last house on the frontage road was boarded up and known to us trailer kids as "The Indian House". If you said Native American in the mid-eighties nobody would know what in the hell you were talking about. It was rumored that the reason it was boarded up was because there had been some murders in there.
So one day my dirty friends and I decide to take a look and prove to each other that we were tough guys. When we got in we saw bloody hand prints smeared all over the living room wall. All plans of going into the basement were off! No venture to the second floor, we are out!
I remember it all very clearly especially the had prints but I have to wonder if it was really blood. (it was dark and we were scared little kids).

I think a day or so later we hit a drain that ran beneath that frontage road, under Hwy 10 and toward the Twin City Ammo Plant. it was a short drain that cam to a quick abrupt end. We crawled out the top and we were just shy of making it behind the fence of the TCAP. Its a good thing too. Rumor around the trailer court was that any kids caught inside the fence were shot on site by "Army Men".

About three years ago I had been looking at a group of explorer's website and really thought it was crazy that someone could just abandon a building (http://decayedrichmond.com/). I'm from an area where the land is so valuable that nothing ever gets abandoned. I had seen photos of an abandoned cookie factory all over the internet and decided to find it. After biking past it a few times and scoping it out I decided to go back with a few friends and we climbed in through a broken window. Unfortunately, we only explored the first floor because my friends were too scared of homeless people to check out any of the other floors. We left and ever since then I've been into abandoned buildings and urban decay

The other day, I went with my brother back to this location, and I got this picture of the first tunnel that I ever really explored.

My first time was when I was 8. Me and my friends found an old abandoned mansion while walking through the woods. So we played cops and robbers and had man fun filled adventures in that place. I was hooked ever since.

First urbex trip was when I was maybe 10 or 11, and it was on an active site. It was a compound with houses, a pond, an immensely thick forest next to it. Me, my sister, and my friend sneaked through this little gate and ran and hid behind a hill. A car drove past maybe ten feet away on this gravel road. Once it was gone, we kept moving toward the forest where we hid and looked at the mansions, trying to figure out how to get it. Another car drove by, freaked us out, so we quickly left. I was hooked then. Though I haven't done an active site since, I loved the fear and the excitement, the adrenaline rush and the story.

Here's the first urbex trip as an adult. I was still a noob, only had my phone to take pics on.
