My first place was a psych east of Toronto back about 13 years ago long before it was demo'd. It was a crazy place with tunnels connecting the buildings. They were helpful because security was near us and we were able to move to another building without being seen. Shame it's no longer there

I just had my 1st UE experience this week. I have been interested in it for some time, but living in Houston most places get torn down pretty quickly. I was in Marshall, TX and was verifying the only post for the city (incidentally, there are a ton of errors on the posting - I will fix if/when I get full membership) and found a nearby grain silo with associated office buildings. Only having a camera I jumped in anyway. The experience was absolutely terrifying and a MASSIVE rush! I walked around quickly snapping shots but got out as fast as I could. After leaving my hands were shaking and my heart was pounding 45 minutes later - Im completely hooked!

After the run-through, I went to the county clerks office and found a place that has public records and news about people and buildings in town. I spent about 2 hours with a guy in his 80's who provided a ton of info about the building I had just been in as well as the foundry I had originally gone to see.

Afterwards, I was driving to see a customer (Im in sales) and found another abandoned building. Blowing off the customer I grabbed my camera and a small flashlight and went exploring. Again the terror was there but I was completely rushing on it.

On my way back to Houston, I found a small abandoned house in a tiny town and explored that. The vision of some overweight, long haired, greasy redneck wielding a chainsaw and wearing a leather mask was in my head the whole time but again the rush came back.

Im completely hooked on this and I am hoping I can get together with some other local folks from Houston who have a bit more experience. Im sure being with other people will help to calm the nerves a bit.1.

When I was like 14, there was a lake in the woods in front of my house with some houses near it(Had to have been abandoned since the 70s maybe even early 80s). And a couple of friends and myself decided to go explore the woods and started looking in these houses and sheds. They were like time capsules, one of the sheds we went into had an early model rotary lawnmower in it AND a 50s model car(its been so long I cant remember what it was) but it was the most amazing find I had ever had, I mean the car was just covered in decades of dust. And the other houses were just FILLED with old appliances, rotary phones, and tvs. Another shed was just littered with HUNDREDS of hubcaps, there had to have been a hubcap from every car from that era. Sadly they tore all those sheds and houses down recently, I remember watching from the edge of the woods, the demo crew pulling the car out of the shed, it was a sad day.

I was 7 or 8 the first time I explored. I was with my mom canoeing, she knew where an old hospital was at. The only thing left was the outer walls. Years later while exploring the countryside looking for abandoned cemeteries we would run across abandoned homes and peek inside.
My first big explore as an adult, I was probably 19 or 20, were some abandoned warehouses in North St Louis. Not the greatest idea to go alone, rough neighborhood and I'm pretty small. The buildings were gutted, lots of squatters, but it was an incredible thrill just being inside. I was already working on my photography degree so it gave me a good excuse to find more abandoned.

My first abandoned building was an old street level store, with what I'm guessing was living space on the upper floor. The street level windows and front door were locked tight, but around back there was a basement door that was accessible. A buddy and I noticed it one day, then came back at night to check it out. I stepped through the doorway first and in the darkness I was surprised to hear loud breathing. I GTFO before my friend could follow me in. It scared the shit out of me. We were curious though, so we scanned around through the doorway with a flashlight. Turns out it was just a hobo sleeping in the corner. It was definitely outrageous, but at the time I couldn't help but picture that scene from I Am Legend where the dog runs into that building and all those creatures are huddled around as the light beam pans around the room. Anyway, we left the hobo alone and returned during the daytime. The basement was nothing but a dirt floor and an elevator shaft upwards. There wasn't even a staircase. We tried climbing up the shaft, but the elevator blocked the way. Still a pretty fun experience though.

My first time was actually spectacular. A good friend and I found a loading dock that was boarded up and crumbling. We bought a crowbar from home depot and grabbed our flashlights and gloves and set out to have our first urbex experience. We first looked for any open windows or doors but only found a small opening with jagged shards of glass lining the bottom. We then tried to break some of the locks with the crowbar but to no avail. I eventually just climbed through the opening and made it through alright. The room the opening led to was full of cardboard boxes and what looked like souvenir nametags. We continued out into the hallway and found a plethora of 80's workout equipment strewn everywhere. The building was nearly impossible to navigate because of the ubiquitous workout equipment. It was a great first urbex experience. I videoed the whole thing but the quality was bad. Here are some shots from the video.1.

I've always had a huge interest in abandoned buildings. I grew up just a few blocks away from hang mans hospital in Moose Jaw but was never brave enough to go in (so many regrets there!). I've always wanted to be brave enough to go exploring but I was always so so afraid so I would instead do a ton of Internet research on places all around. A couple of years ago I was invented to a friends family farm down by McCord and my friend was telling me that about a kilometre from her grandpas farm is an abandon house that her dad owns. He bought the property 20 years ago expecting to build or something but life took over and pretty much forgot about the land. She said her and her brother explored the outside once and it was pretty cool so we made a plan to actually explore the house inside and out. when we went out to the farm I was so excited, I was always afraid of trespassing and we owned this one so we can spend as much time as we want without worry!
We took the quads down the dirt road and made our way to this beautiful white and green house. Some windows were broken and the front steps were nonexistent so we went around the back and found the door was open so we went in. I was so interested and amazed the whole time we were there. The house was built early 1900's and renovated in the 60's or 70's and then left abandoned shortly after. There were documents thrown around everywhere, a few dishes in the cupboards and the totally falling apart abandon stuff that makes you all excited! We spent a long time just hanging out in this little two story, two bedroom house but we got spooked when we found a huge pile of dead cats in the basement :/
That same trip we explored a few other houses around McCord with the permission of farmers that owned the land, one house had the second floor completely fallen down the the first floor. We found a house with a secret room! And another with a basement full of national geographic mags from forever ago! That weekend is what really sparked my interest to actually go and physically explore these places and not just research them online and wish. I now explore any place I can when I can and any road trips I make I check along the way for abandon buildings and make us stop so I can explore. Im a photographer too so I absolutely love the photo opportunities these buildings present.

My first location was with the last Toronto meet. I had loads of fun and I intend to go to more. These will be my only explorations until I feel I have enough experience to go with a smaller group or alone. Call me a pussy if you want, but I feel the smart thing is to take this slow and steady.

My Dad lived right next door to what had once been a school but was all boarded up and disused. I used to poke around over there sometimes and was really interested in going inside. I always found the idea of abandoned or ruined buildings fascinating - I was the kind of kid who loved visiting old castles and forts and shit like that.

So one day, I went around the back and found that someone had ripped enough of a hole in the boarding that I was able to get inside and explore. It was a cool experience - all kinds of old textbooks and desks and stuff just lying there, and the architecture was amazing. It had a mix of the solid institutional architecture of the 1900's combined with the natural decay of a place that hadn't been maintained for over a decade.

Unfortunately I was a stupid kid so I didn't bring a camera with me (this was back in the mid 90's when a "high resolution" digital camera meant 640x480 pixels so it's not like I could just pull out my phone). The location has since been renovated into a library. They did a wonderful job of keeping the structural elements of the original school - very respectful to the original architecture.

Still, I wish I could explore it now like it was - it would've made for some great pictures.

Getting into somewhere shouldn't require a crowbar.

I have always been interested in exploring abandoned buildings and places, but never really did it. I started getting more interested recently since I got my first real camera and stumbled on some videos and photo galleries of Silo 5 in Montreal. My first official location was an abandoned parking lot under an overpass. It was nothing special, but I had a lot of fun taking photos and exploring the area.

I remember my... I was 11 year old, in front where I used to live was a abandoned farm with 4 small houses and me and my friends used to play war battles and each house was a base, the idea of the game was capture the "flag" (the flag was an old t-shirt) the arms (weapons) we use to attack were rocks (not big rocks, small ones) to protect our faces to not get hit by a rock we use a strainer from the kitchen lol. In the summer ALL day playing until my friend was trying to get into our house (I mean our base) from the roof, we saw him and 3 of my group team went to the roof throwing rocks to him and he decided to escape running on the roof and one of those steps the roof broke and my friend go thru the roof straight to the floor and broke his arm. bye bye war games. After that the owner sold the farm and built apartments. Good memories on that old abandoned farm.

As an adult was a prison and I went there last week

Not my first explore per say. But I remember back when I was a kid driving into downtown Buffalo and seeing all the abandoned grain silos along the lake. I grew up in the country a ways south of the city, we would only go to the city maybe a couple times a year. I always looked forward to seeing those old concrete monoliths. I remember telling my parents how cool it would be to see what was inside of them. Those same silos were some of the first places I went when I got in urban exploration. A childhood dream come true, not the typical childhood dream for sure.

My first place I was invited to by some friends. It was a little place tucked back behind some trees and a house and I wondered how the hell my friend even spotted this place, it was quite hidden. Anyways most of the windows were broken, and the place looked a whole lot like an emptied out church. Not much graffiti but there were definite signs of someone living there. A mattress and dirty clothes all in the main entrance. There were also tons of books everywhere! Lots of old things from the 1900s probably, telephones, clothes, old DVDs strewn across the place. lots of cool stuff. Grossest bathrooms ever. But there were a couple lawn chairs that my friends took and still use now. Weirdest part though is that the only reason we thought it was a church was because of the floor plan. We didn't see a bible or cross anywhere.

I stumbled across a webpage talking about a well-known drain in my area. After finding it on Google Maps, I convinced my friend to go into it with me. Every went according to plan until we turned around to come back out again. I slipped and managed to twist my shoulder, and my friend fell into the creek climbing out. Been interested in UE ever since

I guess I explored my first location when I was a wee Oryx around 7 or 8 years old. I was in the woods with my girl scout troop and we wandered near a couple abandoned cabins. Always prone to wandering off, I naturally decided to get a closer look. Some other girl whined something about ghosts as I struggled to climb high enough to peek in the window of one of the cabins. They were unfortunately pretty empty, but that sparked a very intense curiosity for exploring anything I possibly could after that.

I was actually kicked out of that girl scout troop not too long after that for "not showing interest in activities" hehe

When I was in the fourth grade, I really wanted to go in this abandoned steam tower from like the early 20th century. My friend was too scared to go in with me, and many many years later, I came back and checked it out. It was one of the coolest places I have ever been. Somehow I was able to climb to the top without dying, a 50 or more foot drop from the rickety rusted steel staircase that was about 2 years from becoming completely detached. I really enjoyed it and explored a drain system close to my house. I ordered AAA and am looking forward to doing more exploration, namely the Cincinnati Subway tunnels that were never completed.

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

My first place was a small psychiatric hospital a few blocks away from my house back home. At the time of moving in, the hospital had only been empty for a few years but sat near a corner that was filled with businesses + houses. Since I had absolutely zero experience doing any urbexing back then, I started off by walking around and taking pictures of the outside hoping to find another entrance that wasn't right through the front doors. (The sliding doors were busted and calling your name.)

The first time I took pictures, I was "stopped" by a Fire Marshall who not only told me how to get in, but told me entrances of other spots around my hometown. (There weren't many, so I found that very cool of him.) I gave it a couple of weeks and then came back at night with friends and ended up having some eerie run-ins with whoever it was living inside there.

It makes me sad the place has become so run down, because even though it was only two floors, I'm always going to hold that place close to my heart. Every time I come back home for holidays, that's the first place I ask to drive by! Crazy to think that was already four years ago this summer.
