Pretty sure I know where you're talking about as this was my first urban exploring adventure too! I went with a bunch of friends at night and stumbled upon some super interesting relics throughout the hospital (adult cribs, original silverware from the kitchen, etc). I really couldn't wait to go back during the day to get some sick photos, and I've been exploring ever since!

Possibly, although this one doesn't have much at all left behind so you may be thinking of another very popular spot in MD which kinda does.

My first exploration was at a pretty famous abandoned hospital in Chicago. It wasn't too exciting of a building. It's one of those locations that comes up if you just google 'abandonded chicago'. Anywyay, the first time I went there I didnt go into the building. I walked behind the fence onto the property and started looking for a way inside. There was graffiti and rubble everywhere (one of the buildings was half demolished). Suddenly, something falls just a few feet in front of me. I didn't look at what it was, or up at the building it came from because of how scared and inexperienced I was with abandoned places. I ran out of there and ran half a mile back to my car. I decided to not let something like that prevent me from going back. I went back with a small group of friends, i think it was 3 people with me. We drove around the building and saw a security car parked right where i had been before. We needed a different way in. Then, we drove down a small road behind the building which dead ends, but we saw a small opening in the fence. So we parked our car, and walked back to the open fence. We ran inside, and luckily found a door on the side of the building we were on. We climbed up the 11(?) flights of stairs and got one of the most amazing and notorious views of an abandoned rooftop pool. After that, I started exploring a bunch of random buildings around my area and got a bit more of experience. Also if you made it this far, thanks for reading my boring story lol

My wife had been watching some documentary series on Netflix about abandoned locations, and they did an episode on the Salton Sea. We were absolutely captivated by it, especially since we had been driving past signs for the Salton Sea for years on our way from Phoenix to California.

We had another trip to Anaheim coming up, and the morning we were scheduled to head back home, we left a few hours early so we could take a detour and check out Bombay Beach on the north side of the Salton Sea. After exploring for several hours, we were officially hooked.

My first time, my friends asked me if I wanted to visit a "haunted" area close to my town. The story behind it was that someone was murdered and their body was left at some destroyed house. When I went I thought it was so cool, especially because the house was in the middle of no where. After that my friends and I started going to multiple abandoned areas and it's been a hobby of mine ever since.

My father decided that he wanted to have a fun day in Columbus. So we went to a record store then out to eat. Then i brought up that i knew of an old military fort that was converted to a school with vacant buildings behind the main ones and i dragged him out there. When we arrived at the school, we realized we didn't have a flashlight. which was a problem since it was dark out. He said we could use his phone even though it was almost dead. Much to our dismay, most all of the buildings had been securely boarded. Except for one building that was fenced in and had the door ripped off. The fence had one corner ripped up, so we were able to crawl underneath. I was the first one to crawl through because my father didn't want to, but I eventually made him since he saw somebody across the street and thought they were coming over to bust him. The building was heavily vandalized, but it still kept my interest. we were in the back of the building when his pone died and we were encapsulated in darkness. We couldn't see a thing so we had to feel around to make sure we didn't trip. When we got out and drove off, I knew that I need to explore more. So I got our uncle to drive my sister and I to Cleveland. we explored 6 buildings that day, and I've been hooked since.

We're gonna get there. We don't need a whereabouts.

Greetings!

I was trying to study for finals but came across urbex on YouTube. I eventually became obsessed. Camp Hero radar tower is right by my summer home, so I decided to go there with a friend and my camera.

One day when I was young, my friend and I were hanging out in a park near his house. He told me about a cool tunnel underneath a nearby road and I asked if we could check it out. It was a pretty small drainage culvert that ran under the road but the interesting thing was that it was made entirely out of brick. We were both fascinated by it and after checking it out, we began following the creek. The creek ran under a couple more streets in smaller concrete drains which we squeezed through. The best part was at the end of the creek where it ran under the freeway. The drain was quite a bit bigger than the previous ones and a lot longer. When scammed through it barely holding our excitement in. On the other end, the small creek emptied into a larger creek. After that day, I was hooked on exploring drains. I quickly found other, much more interesting drains and began to explore. I love researching the history behind places as well and knowing the full story.

Intersection of W Glenside Ave & Limekiln Pike 19038. Car dealership, entered in the back. Remember seeing a desk with a built in safe. Walked through the show room and out the front door. Went back to "Mom" at the drug store across the street. This happened around 1964...

My mom has always had this things for bricks. Like, building bricks - the red clay ones. She hunts out demos and abandoned historic buildings to get bricks from. She does all kinds of yard projects and home improvement projects with those bricks. She'd drag me around as a kid looking for bricks and other local artifacts.

I guess it rubbed off. I've been "exploring" my whole life, so I can't pinpoint the first location in the literal sense.

The first location I tracked down and purposely explored on my own though was a local Children's Asylum.

Growing up in the area, I heard a string of "mad mental asylum doctor" legends. As a budding historian, I dug out everything I could and eventually tracked down the origin of the stories. Time went on and I eventually found myself near the location. The boyfriend (husband now) and I explored the place in awe and amusement.

For whatever reason, the hunt for the story and location made the adventure all the more thrilling. I've been digging for unique locations ever since.

My first location belonged to a friend of mine from elementary school. His family moved away shortly after because their house was sitting on property that was purchased by a development company. (This was years ago in the mid-2000s and the house is still there but they haven't done anything with the land.)

When I was in grade 9 I took some buddies and we explored the house. It was always in pretty rough shape but by then it had been vandalized even worse. This was before we even knew about urban exploration, this forum, or that it was actually a thing.

My first location after discovering the term was an old-collapsed water filtration plant (I think it was that when it was standing) and you can check that out right here: https://www.uer.ca...=1&threadid=127921

Hard to pinpoint one specific first location, so I'll list two that kinda set me on the road of getting serious(-ish)

1. In High School, a few friends of mine and I found an old school for special-needs kids and ran around the inside. We were reckless, irresponsible, and when we came back after dark with the intent of re-enacting a mix of Resident Evil and the Avengers, we were accosted by cops who thought we were throwing a party. (We had tried to set that up on Facebook, but nothing materialized. Interestingly, the day we went was the same day we had set for the party on Facebook, so we all figured that Facebook had alerted the cops). I was hooked *immediately* because I thought it was absurd that four squad cars of cops would pull their guns on a group of highschoolers for trying to get into a building that wasn't fenced off, had 0 (zero) 'no trespassing' signs surrounding it, and was just a hundred yards off a pretty major road.

2. A few months back, I was walking around and saw a way onto a rooftop by climbing the dilapidated facade of an old warehouse. We're talking about a building that's maaaybe 10 or 15 feet tall. I climbed on top, and wandered from rooftop to rooftop until I found my way into a construction site, where a classic theater was being demolished. I had no idea that the theater existed and no idea regarding the grand scale of the thing. And this made me realize that there had to be MUCH more hidden just out of sight.

I got started early, long before I was aware that Urban Exploration was A Whole Big Thing. When I was little, I lived in a certain part of Dallas that's now entirely gentrified, with all of the old houses destroyed. Our house had been built in the 1930s, except for parts that were rebuilt in the '70s after a fire, and there were certain parts of the house I wasn't allowed in, which didn't actually stop me.

The crackhouse down the street was, likewise, built in the '30s. And, likewise, caught on fire at some point. I was only 5-6 at the time, and was not supposed to leave the yard, but I ended up exploring the burnt out crackhouse a few times before we were forced to move out. There wasn't that much interesting, but that was my first experience being in Places You Should Not Be.

Since learning about urban exploration as a thing a few years ago, I've explored a (mostly) abandoned mall, buildings at a (mostly) abandoned park nearby, a few construction sites, and a few other things.

The first place I went to was a middle school in my hometown. My best friend and I decided to check out the place since a window in the side of the building was completely busted out and open. They once had a haunted house in there spit was littered with Halloween props, fake blood, severed heads, etc. I remember going into the gym and my friend stepped on something crunchy, and looked down to see a “mummified” cat. I remember the second I slinked through that window I just felt extremely nervous and scared because what I was doing was “illegal” but my curiosity got the better of me. I was 15.

I went on a trip in high school to Japan, I had heard rumors that they never locked their rooftops and wanted to see if it was true. Upon arriving and after a bit of sneaking out I started to explore, just going wherever looked good. It was the best time I've had in my life and every since then I'm always searching for the same rush of exploring and seeing things that most people don't get a chance to.

I used to be a city boy and mostly stayed in playing video games or working out.

That all changed 3 years ago when I moved into the north. I viewed it as a life changing moment and decided to pick up new hobbies and become the man I looked up to. I got my motorcycle license, learned to drive standard, moved out from my parents house, and became more independent. The first thing I saw when I got off the plane in town was a gigantic mountain covered in fog not 300 metres from the airport. I was immediately intrigued and wanted to climb it and explore it. I don't know why, I've never felt that way about nature before.

I did some of that on my own and then I started a relationship with a local woman who knew the area well and was showing me around. She showed me some of the countryside but in particular showed me an abandoned mountain ski jump site.
I was fascinated with it and began researching it and planning to check it out. I did recce and created a plan to infiltrate with a friend. I knew it would be trespassing but I was careful to avoid being caught.

I started exploring it at 530 am with my friend and we had the time of our lives exploring it and climbing the lifts which gave us an amazing view of town, the mountain range nearby, and nature all under the sunrise.

After that I began researching and trying to find new locations to check out. I didn't even know what it was I was doing, like a name for the hobby. A couple months ago I randomly discovered the wikipedia article for "urban exploring" and then bam I knew what it was I was doing and then discovered this site.

I was 10 years old and fishing with my family. There was a little island on the lake near our house, so one day my dad decides to check it out. We walk twenty feet up a little trail on the island and see an abandoned shack covered in graffiti. I was creeped out, but also curious, and have been hooked ever since. Went there on my own about fifty more times that same summer.

Back in the early 90s, my mom was on the board for some group that was fundraising to preserve Eastern State - as such, she was allowed access before it was ever open to the public and she somehow managed to bring me along. I remember having to put on a hard hat and carry around a flashlight - at 11-12 years old and super adventurous, it was pretty much the coolest thing ever. In '97 or so, I got busted sneaking into Byberry. I was terrified that my parents would be pissed, which they were because I was so young, but fast forward a few years, and my mom and I explored Pennhurst TOGETHER. Must be in my genes or something.

I'm glad your parents understand! I tried to introduce my family to this hobby, but they weren't having any of it- they're convinced it's only a matter of time before I'm gang raped to death in a back alley by a crowd of methed up hobos (yes, that's actually the example they chose).

Needless to say, I don't try to talk to them about urbex these days.

My mom is a photographer, and a collector of the macabre. For example, she collects old mourning photos (AKA: pics of dead kids) so naturally, she was intrigued.

I've yet to come across gangs of methed up hobos (haha) but I have seen some pretty cracked out squirrels...

So, the first spot I hit was a lot less interesting than my second so I'll tell the story of the second one first.
So, a friend of mine, who wants to be refered to as "Yomph", A friend called Big T, and I decided on a whim we wanted to go urban exploring. I had done it in the past as a kid but don't remember any details so they don't count, but we decided to hit a storm drain on a cliffside with a good view of the city. Now, the photo below is from springtime, but we decided to do this in the dead of winter.
We are on the side of a cliffside at the top, ice is leading all the way down to the river (80 foot slide to our demise) and we just say screw it and start sliding down the ice. Big T brought a grappling hook he made in his garage with him and we hooked it to a tree to slide down. so, Big T went to the right side of the drain, Yomph went to the left, and I went straight down the middle. Yomph ended up getting stuck on the left side and went down to the river (which was frozen partially) and slid across the frozen river and climbed up the right side. Big T at this point was on the drain at this point and I was trying to figure out a way down. Now, my idiot brain decided "let's slide down this snow that looks decently trustworthy and not icy at all." Little did i know, 5 seconds from that point i was going 5 m/s ( 18 km/h ) down permafrozen dirt. so, I miss the concrete overhang because i hit a bump and Big T Swings his arm over to me, Call of Duty style, and grabs my jacket as i gripped onto the concrete.

TL;DR
I almost died my second time Urbexing

Photo taken during summer.
