I went and drove it Sunday morning and left it at the dealer. It ran nice and drove well but the check engine light came on 10 mins into the drive. Said something about emissions workshop. AC wasn't very cold, tint was coming off all the widows, leather was coming un-stitched on the seats and the interior in general wasn't in that great of shape.

I couldn't see anything telling me it had been wrecked or see any signs of a botched repair job on the front end so I'm not sure why the headlights/grill didn't match up. Also didn't have any service records for the timing belt/water pump and I didn't want to buy and then have to stick more money/time into doing that.

We're going to keep looking for something else.

Sounds like it was for the best. There are A LOT of flood damaged cars on the market and maybe you ran into one. Interior shouldn't be coming apart like that when only 10yo or so. Never know what you can come across in a used car lot....

Well for $700 dollars more than they wanted for the Passat I ended up with this thing.

2004 A6 AWD 3.0 V6 5 speed triptronic Transmission
3 years newer 10K less miles and in much better shape. Still salvage title but it was just a fender and door never had airbags go off and no frame or suspension damage. Plus they had a huge amount of pictures from before the repair for me to look through. After going through all them I'm really surprised it was totaled. It also had paper work and receipts from dealer service where it was sold new so I called them. They remember it and said it had been trouble free and owners took good care of it.

Makes me feel a lot better than the mystery history passat from "Ali"
We've put 500 miles on it already and nothing has come up yet. I crawled under it and changed the oil, I was really impressed how clean it was for 10 years old. Zero rust and bearings, ball joints etc are all tight one CV boot was starting to crack but I already have a new one ordered.

Anyone have any other thoughts/things I should lookout for or check, besides timing belt? I'm putting one on for peace of mind as soon as it gets in at the parts store.

I'm not too worried about it as I'll be the one doing all the work on it. I'm sure that parts will be higher but I knew that before the purchase. Besides my daily driver is the cummins in the background after buying (performance) parts for that, most passenger cars seem cheap to work on.

No offense Nismo but that's exactly why we ended up with a boring silver one. Every audi I came across with a bright colored or fancy paint job had some mouth breathing 3 brain cell idiot owner that thought their car was worth more because it was stanced/flush/whatever.....

Of all the cars pictured only the wagon could make it down my driveway without ripping something off. Also we bought the car to get around in the snow (hence buying an AWD) and all those cars look like they could get stuck in flat parking lot with 2 inches of snow on it.

I guess it takes all kinds, but I never understood why you would want to do that to your car makes them about useless for any type of real daily driving. Not to mention the tire wear/safety issues of stretched/cambered cars.

Edit: I did get a chance to check out the timing belt and its good to go looks like new. I've got to throw a set of pads on the front end and get the rotors turned it shakes a little when your on the brakes at lower speeds.

I wasn't really sold on the car in general when we got it more I drive it the more I like it. The fact that I can put the drivers seat all the way back and get comfortable but the person in the back isn't smashed either is very nice. Also I changed the oil in it and was surprised how easy everything was to get to.
