Driving a water cooled VW now

So, I took my 65 bug up to Minneapolis and back. exhaust stud pulled out half way up, and it just wasn't running well. Then I got home and the starter decided not to work, so I decided it was time for a newer car to drive daily. I hopped on craigs list and searched for a short time before finding a mk1 GTI in good shape and a mk3 vr6 in alright shape. I could look at the vr that night or the mk1 the next morning. I planned to do both, but ended up looking at the vr for 1800 and getting texts from the mk1 guy saying 800 cash would buy the car. I cringed and told him I'd be there in the morning. I looked over the VR6 and noticed a nice spot of oil under it and a good amount coating the under side of the car. Checked the dip stick...it needs lubrication honey. Yeah almost empty....so I tell the kid I'll give him 1500 for it and he buys me a shit ton of oil. Deal was made and I drove it home on the stupid 17 inch audi wheels with bald ass cracking tires. Oil pressure light and wonderful beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep materialize a mile down the road. I pull over and call the kid. He forgot to mention that if I just revved the engine...which no one needed to tell me to do with the magnaflow exhaust fitted to it.....a beautiful sound does this thing make....the light and horrible sound would become absent. This worked twice and a couple miles from home that trick was moot due to the alarm being real....the leak having allowed the entire contents of the engine to empty in 2 hours.

So The next day I removed the oil cooler and filter housing to replace the sensor. Hasn't lost a drop of oil since, but is losing coolant slowly.

It still gets 25mpg highway and pulls like a freight train with 207k miles on it.

More details and photos to come.

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

My Dad Bought a 2002 MK4 Jetta GLI 24 Valve VR6 recently - If you idle in 6th gear - it goes 60Km/H.
IT has endless power - You will not be disappointed with a VR6 Anything. (Assuming the engine holds together - they're crazy expensive to fix and a pain in the ass to fix compared to a MK1. (I've parted out two Mk1's)

Yeah, my dad put on the magniflow exhaust on it - Nice low hum at highway speeds so you don't go deaf, but when you accelerate it sounds INCREDIBLE, like a high performance bike. It's also got the monsoon sound system... Incredible vehicle.

a friend of mine bought a 98 Golf GTi VR6 back in 99... traded a near new 98 Neon R/T coupe for it... the car was awesome, until it broke... all at once. :P It was a fun car, though... (i think I have a pic of it somewhere...)

VR6's are awesome sounding, and they really arent that expensive to fix I find.

Theyre kinda underpowered and drink alot of gas the 2.8's but sound oh so good

the 3.2 vr6 supercharged =

I'm swapping a VR6 into a 2001 Beetle. It will be glorious.

I drove a Mk4 R32 today- they were never officially sold in Canada. I drove one a couple years ago, but my goodness I forgot what an awesome little car they were. And that sound!!!!!!!

I found a mk4 R:.32 on rt 65 on my way to work monday. peace sign and then he got on it and I downshifted and got on it....yeah, I got to see those tail pipes and tail lights.

The 17 inch audi wheels with new tires are a serious issue. My fenders are peeling the rubber off them every time I hit a bump.

how small are the wheel arches, or how large are the tires you're running? Unless it's absolutely slammed you shouldnt be rubbing fender on 17s, especially high-offset OEM rims. I drive every day lowered (albeit not significantly) on 18x8.5 rims with 225/40/18 tires and have never once rubbed...

My suspicion is that it is in dire need of new suspension. There are things jammed in the springs in the back....I'll have to take photos of that. I know shocks and torsion suspension. Struts and springs are new to me.
