Ever since I first heard of how a constant variable transmission works, I've always thought it just an awesome idea, but I don't think I could stand to drive a car with one. What do you all think?

My first experience with a cvt trans was a Polaris four wheeler. Hated it. In a car I doubt I'll find it any more satisfying.

I've driven a Subie and Nissan with a CVT. Both sucked. I actually kinda enjoy the one in my Yamaha Grizzly though.

I thought the sound for the voice-over was terrible. Too low of a sampling rate. If they want to use that video to sell themselves, they need to have a more professional presentation.

But regarding the transmission, my ShopSmith uses the same idea to change speeds. It's pretty cool, but the belts wear out pretty quickly. I expect that would be a problem in car trannies too. What's the expected life of one of those belts?

I purposely did not look at cars with a CVT transmission in them which narrowed the paying field significantly.

A belt inside the transmission gives me the heebejeebies. No thank you, I dont want to pay the dealer or a shop to replace the belt at 90k miles since its "at the end of its service life."

I've driven a few cars with them (Nissans and Chryslers) and they all felt like they were going to break. Especially the Chrysler.

Just curious... what problems have you seen in them? What are the weak spots? My 7 year old Yamaha is holding up nice after some rough miles. Well for now anyway...

Honestly they're fine if you buy a quality machine - the problem comes when people don't service them, so obviously the belt breaks down, and then all the little springs and what not get tired, it's a really good idea, and a cool one, it's just a pain in the ass,

I remember dreading creek crossings in my Polaris TrailBoss because if the damned belt on the cvt got wet you had to rev the shit out of it to dry before you could go more than 3 miles an damned hour.

my friends 2002 Yamaha Big Bear was like that... he tried everything to seal it, finally, one muddy ride, it just stopped leaking.

I've driven two cars with CVT's... One was a Subaru Justy, the other a Saturn Vue. Both sucked. The CVT in the Justy was just dumb; it was like lets take a fun, inexpensive, piss-pounder of a car and put this dumb shit on it. The Vue was another dumb idea... Let's take an absurdly plump compact SUV and put THIS stupid transmission in it and see how long it lasts before it breaks spectacularly.

no thanks... three pedals on the floor and several gear positions in the console if you please
