Toyota had a digital dash as well. It was, of course, boring.

That's the way to do it. Just numbers are too hard to read quickly.

You want space age? These were cool. A friend had one in high school. Hideous car, and I don't really understand putting stuff like this in a Buick since the average owner age is 107, but anyhow...

I guess the Reatta had it as well.

Now that I think about it, my 80's Chryslers with analog clusters had gauge issues all the time as well.

The tachometer in my 89 Shelby did a full 360 while I was checking fault codes.

My buddy had an 87 celica with a digital cluster.

I had the same steering wheel as that Celica in my '91 Tercel- the hard plastic stock wheel sucked, so when I found the Celica in the wreckers, I figured I'd give it a shot. The blue leather was a PERFECT match to my interior, and the horn wiring was plug and play.

I was just thinking about the reatta. My friend's dad is obsessed with them. It was a sorry excuse for a sports car indeed.

The mk2 gti also had a pretty simple digital dash which I'd love to have.

it wasn't meant to be nor ever considered a sports car... it was a 'personal car' along the lines of the Cadillac Allante, Oldsmobile Toronado and Trofeo.

Hah!

Actually... all of my E30 BMWs had this "Check system" that would let you know if you had any light out and check all of your fluid levels, etc... an LED would illuminate on an overhead panel, and your instrument cluster would flash "CHECK" until you pressed a button... great idea, but if you used an aftermarket bulb with a SLIGHT difference in resistance, the car would get angry.

I had a rental Nissan in December that had a warning for the gas cap. It took over the odometer until I cranked the shit out of the thing. Then the warning for low tire pressure came on when it got cold out and did the same thing. Nothing like disabling crucial gauges for piddling reasons!
