If time, money, and space were no object what would you buy, build or renovate for your personal living space? Where would it be? Post drawings, sketches or photos if you can.

A definite purchase of an existing home, here in Kitchener's downtown core. Victorian, Edwardian and Rihardsonian examples can be found all thru the heart of the city. A tasteful reno that would capture the original features would be in order. Of course, updated wiring, kitchen, bathroom and other interior changes would be required to accomodate todays lifestyles and technology.

There used to be a small abandoned factory near my apartment (sadly, it was torn down) that I would have loved to live in. All of the machinery inside was gone, so it was just one enormous room with 60 ft. ceilings, skylights, huge windows with 60 panes of glass in each window, nice brickwork, huge wooden beams--I'm sure we've all UEed at least one building like this.

This particular building had a smaller enclosed office area inside, about 350 sq. ft. total, which I would have remodeled into a living area not unlike a studio apartment with the modern stuff we all need like heat, kitchen, plumbing, etc. That way, I'd have a comfortable living space, and I'd have the huge factory space to work in (when I'm not at my dumbass day job I'm a painter) or just to sit in and marvel at how old factories look so much better than new ones.

I dont know all the styles and their terms but this is just what i would like. Id prefer a new house, there is somthing i am not into about living in a weatherboard home, i prefer bricks or corregated iron. I have always been drawn to the houses with perfect symetry, and the insides have to have alot of white, no darker or earthy tones, and a must is either large windows or many skylights to bring in the natural light. and i know it would be a big problem with reguklations and would cost alot but i need my tunnels and hidden rooms. It may sound lame but i find it cool to have all of your tunnels from places to place like from the house to a secret garden shed, and maybe a study concealed behind a bookcase ;D.

I've always liked the idea of a "house within a house". An old abandoned factory can act as a shell, then small living units can be constructed within, possibly joined by tunnels. This gives you unlimited freedom to create any space you want without worrying about weather protection, foundation etc. So a gutted factory or warehouse is my dream house...not sure my wife would be into it.

Otherwise, my favorite house of all time is the Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier, I know many people blame him for so many of the mistakes of the modernist era, but he created many beautiful spaces in many different styles...

I've been obsessed with owning a home that has secret passageways and rooms ever since I was a kid. You know, fake bookshelves and everything - I think I used to watch too much scooby doo.

My dream house will be built from scratch...I'm in the renovation business and when I finally build my own home I want it to be new from the ground up...there are just too many hidden conditions and pre-existing blunders that I deal with on a daily basis here at work.

I will definetly be designing something earth sheltered, utilizing passive solar gain and off the grid. I plan on having basements and sub-basements, connector tunnels and outbuildings along with a healthy dose of secret passages, hidden rooms and a few towers thrown in for good measure.

I working on a few sketches at the moment...when they develop a little farther I'll post them here..

Ok after much thought I have decided what I would want for my dream house.

A house with rooms made up of "Palm Houses", kinda like this:

"Palm House at Kew Gardens" in England

Maybe with just one central room of that style and some more normal rooms around it, and cause I had the ability, there would be alot of indoor gardens. But I would hire some one for that, I really hate to garden. I decided I wanted this after visiting the Botanical Gardens in Washington DC today. I would just take there buidling if they were to say not need it any more
I did a small amount of reserch on the "Palm House at Kew Gardens" for a school project. I was facinated with the iron work and such. So a victorian one would be even better. Like the one in Druid Hill Park in Baltimore:

I will probably change my mind next week, but that is what I would do now with unlimited cash....

My dream house would have to be a Victorian style two and a half story house. I have explored one and it was just amazing inside considering that many of the original wall-papers and artifacts were still inside and in their original places.

To keep it a bit modest, I'd love to restore and live in one of these houses-
http://external.bc...opage.cfm?id=19006

They're currently abandoned and in very decrepit condition, but the area is beautiful and I love old stone houses like this.

Nice choice Roland. Those would definitely be on the list of candidates for me to renovate. Among the many buildings I would love to renovate for a home, I would like to go for one of the cottages at Whitby Psych or even the Regent Theatre in Downtown Oshawa (beautiful ceiling).

Failing that, I was fooling around one day and went nuts on designing a dream house that I could build from scratch. It contains some features that would make even the millionaires jealous! It would be the ultimate retreat from this crazy f---ed up society of ours. I would also decorate it in some of the really old style methods with modern technology in the wings.

I think my dream would have to be this. I'd have a separate room for each photo shoot.

If I ever became independently wealthy I would definitely buy a Kirkbride. I don't know if I would live in it though, I might turn it into a mental health care museum of some sort.

I agree with Xrahy, I'm building from scratch although the thoughts of doing something with an old building or especially a church has always interested me. I actually tried to buy one years ago I came across out towards Kaufman but couldnt get them to untwist all the old deeds etc that was involved. The downfall to so many old buildings for me is I gots to have my space and some yard so I can let the critters out, Im not into walking dogs 15 times a day!

Im actually looking now for lots to build the attached and like xrahy it will be very eco-friendly with lots of green material solar heat and water, well, and what not. It's also desined based on the theory of Sarah Susanka of building smaller vs what they build now days with huge rooms with monster cielings and tons of wasted space. Its actually designed by planning rooms around the furniture and using the saved money in putting it into the details such as art nooks, running trims., more windows, and such. She hasa great site at http://www.susanka.com/ Only thing everyone thinks is crazy is theres only me and my partner! We both have to have our own spaces for our hobbies though plus a guest room for the visitors! So even though its just us we have a four bedroom house!

I know this thread is old but I wanted to share the house I designed for myself. I'm 16 so it'll be a while before I'll actually be able to build it but if I ever do it'd be beautiful. I can post a larger version if necessary
