Peterborough Family YMCA by jerm IX, on Flickr

Come on in for a tour of the long sealed and alarmed YMCA in Peterborough, this might be your only chance ever. The original gym is the oldest "Y" in Canada.

Follow me, but stay close and remain silent...

I had a job as a cleaner there back in high school, whenever I worked Sundays I would "borrow" my boss' keys (he wasn't in but we had access to his office) and explore the unused portions (as well as take naps...you can only clean a change room so many times in an 8 hour shift!!)

It was such a neat old building. I quit shortly after we moved to the new one (which did not have secret stairways and nooks and crannies).

I remember swimming, and playing squash, basketball among many other sports in this building like it was yesterday.

Would've liked to see more photos in the thread, rather than be directed to your blog post. But the location looks really cool.

Nice. I wish Hamilton's original YMCA was still around, I believe it was of the same vintage. Unfortunately the current one only dates back to the '60s or '70s. I definitely would have been attracted to those attic areas. I love the exposed brick and beams.

I used to pass by this everyday for 6 years, always wondering what it looked like inside.

Thank you for satiating my curiosity...No chances this will happen again eh?

I was looking for some old information on my very first cell phone recently and actually came across some photos I had snapped with it from one of my paid explores, haha. It was always hard to resist not spending every single shift exploring the building, there were a lot of nooks and crannies to discover.

Never bought the cord to connect the phone to a computer (it's a 10 year old flip phone), so I doubt I'll ever get the pics off of it.

That's too bad. Wouldn've been nice to see some decade old pics.

And I forgot to mention that I read in the paper a few days ago that the Y building was just sold to a new developer.

The abandoned/upper floors looked almost the same, just dirtier since no one had been up there. I know they got cleaned up around the time that Y shut down, we had a "doors open" type event one Sunday evening before moving to the new building.

I've got this one image that I emailed myself when that phone was active, supposedly a former employee hung themselves up in the tower. No idea if it's actually true or not, but I did come across a string that looked like it had been cut off. Note the incredible 10-year old flip phone photo quality.
