Hi all! Just wanted to run an idea by you to see if you all had any input on gear/approach.

A skydiver friend of mine just invited me to rappel from the bottom of a hot air balloon and film him as he jumps off.

I'm planning on rigging two ropes to the basket: 1 dynamic and 1 static.

I will get both ropes to the same length, and then tie a knot in the end of the static. I will tie the end of the dynamic to my harness as a backup.

I will have two hand ascenders already tied into the belay loop of my harness and clipped out of the way (I'm most comfortable with the Texas kick ascending method, therefore two hand ascenders)

I will then attach an ATC to the static rope, and tie a prussik knot over that for backup/braking.

I will then rappel off the side, and stop where I feel comfortable. I will weight my prussik knot, then attach my main ascender and foot ascender.

My friends will jump, I'll film, and then I'll unweight and detach the prussik and ATC before ascending.

I'll then ascend at a comfortable pace and re-enter the basket.

I'll be carrying so other minimal gear as well in case something interesting happens (extra prussik cord, a couple lockers, some webbing, etc.)

What do you all think? Am I missing anything? Would you do it differently?

I have been climbing 160'+ after i do my rope swings. Im not sure what the name of the climbing type are...ive tried a few ways but the way i do it now: i have a rope access harness with built in rope grab at the chest. Then i have hand held one rope grab with two leg loops. I find it is easiest and fastest that way back up the rope. Obviously what ever way is most comfortable for you is provably best.

Keyword: BACKUP, it sounds like you all ready have a backup .

The one thing that never leave my climbing harness or my rope access harness is a Petzl tibloc ascender. It has saved my ass once and came handy a few other times.

Or.... you could take skydiving lessons and just cut the rope after his jump ;)

I wish I could take skydiving lessons, but somehow I don't think I'll be ready by Tuesday... ;)

(I am no climbing professional btw) I think the dynamic is a bit overkill and may cause tangle problems in the wind but redundancy never hurt anyone.

Just my personal preference I would use a GriGri as my main rappel device since it is auto camming and provides easy changeover. Then back it up with a Prussik.

In any event just make sure your anchor point is solid and you have adequate rope protection for the edge. You sound like you know what you're doing. Link us some killer footage when its over... Which reminds me- make some bomber tethers for your other gear and clip them onto your gear loops so you don't lose anything.

Awesome video and editing. Didn't know that the second guy was going too when he popped off the rope, almost gave me a little heart attack. Really well done.
