Welcome to The Time Capsule House, one of Ontario's most interesting and well preserved abandoned farmhouses.

The location specifics and family history have been a well kept secret amongst the small handful of explorers in the know, and I will maintain that same level of secrecy.

Even amidst the secrecy though, the house's contents, many of them still in place, give us a tiny glimpse into who these people were. They were a multi-generational family farming the land. They were collectors of many an item. They were very well read, intellectual folks, with a predilection for religion and philosophy. They were also an overtly musical family. Most importantly, they clearly loved each other. And now, they are gone forever.

I could add further narrative to describe the experience, which was phenomenal, despite being on edge at every moment and dripping in sweat, but this time around I'll just let the images speak for themselves.

The full set of pics is here...

My god the place is beautiful...

I'm really happy you folks keep this a well preserved secret...I'd hate for people to loot the wonderfully kept items there.

Great shot of the guitar(?) (Looks a little small for one)

The picture on the mantle piece made me smile. Must be/have been a beautiful loving home.

Respect for keeping the details hush on this one!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit, you captured a lot of small details that I had hoped to see.

Very nice.

Their belongings, dedication to religion and family portrait tells us a lot about the family and life in Ontario for a perhaps Loyalist or a family that was very loyal to the British Crown.

As a footnote to this, I contacted the daughter of the woman that used to live here. I told her that I had happened upon the house and that the house was in bad shape. I mentioned that the main floor would eventually collapse into the basement. There are already spongy spots and a few holes in the main floor. I didn't say anything about going in the house, but said I'd looked through the windows.

I don't normally do this but the sheer number of childhood and college year memorabilia was overwhelming and it would be a waste to see it rot away. The woman's entire life from Grade 1 report cards and ribbons up to college diplomas and certificates was here.

I had hoped the woman would show interest in claiming some of her mother's items. I also offered to help her seal up the living room ceiling with a tarp as water damage was quite bad.

The woman began to sound traumatized, literally. Her voice cracked, she was unable to speak and said she had to go but to call her back later.

I followed this up with a letter instead. I reiterated my offer to help fix (poorly) the roof, to bring her any of the items she wanted, informed her of an interest to purchase the record player and apologized for what may have been an intrusive phone call.

I never heard back. Some people might think this was wrong, that it might lead to the house being sealed. In this case though I believe the interest of saving an entire house full of someone's life far outweighed the possibility she sealed it up. Sometimes you have to remember these places belong to people and hold a lifetime of their memories.

I have reasons to believe that what happened was that when the mother died, she left everything to the church rather than her daughter. This is why the woman doesn't wish to discuss the property.

So the floors slowly weaken month by month, rain fall by rain fall until one day it will be no more.

Interesting story.

I'm with Intrinsic, hate to see all that personal contents get destroyed by time.

These shots are all great btw. I love the books stacked up the wall in that room.

That's sad, but it seems like you did the right thing. It's a house, not an abandoned factory or some industrial building. Regular people tend to care more about houses than the typical abandoned building.

I totally applaud your gesture! ... The very least, the belongs should be sent to a local museum or somewhere to preserve these items. Like you said, it's someone's entire life story. It would be a shame for mother nature to take over! I am sure some local organization would love to have the belongs donated to them or, as you've mentioned auctioned off. Those books can not be rotted away! For sure some archivist or library would want them. If the daughter doesn't want to do anything about it perhaps an organization would.

Excellent set; It is amazing how much a slightly different colour setting can make this place look totally different than the other sets we have seen from here.

It's very touching to see all those personal items left behind...and forgotten completely.

It would break my heart to witness a place like that one being vandalized...and, unfortunately, it is the fate of almost every single location that ends up on this forum.

Kudos for keeping that place a secret....and you are obviously doing a good job at it since it's still in pristine condition.
